MALIBU, Calif. — Saint Mary's women's soccer came away with a huge 1-0 win over the West Coast Conference's top team, Pepperdine. The statement victory for the Gaels marks the Waves' first conference loss of the season, their first defeat since early September against San Diego State, and Saint Mary's first win over Pepperdine since 2018.
The matchup featured performances from both the WCC's top offense in Pepperdine and the conference's number one defense in Saint Mary's. The difference maker came early in just the second minute of play, when Emmie Ennis found the back of the net for her second goal of the season. Despite being outshot 16-13, the Gaels held onto their early lead for the remainder of the match.
FIRST HALF SMC 1 - 0 PEPP
Saint Mary's wasted no time in their faceoff with Pepperdine. Just two minutes in, Aleiyah Schexnayder delivered the ball to Briana Salvetti, who then connected with Ennis down the left side of the field. The junior midfielder took the pass, drove just outside the six-yard box, and fired a powerful shot off the back post and into the back of the net to give the Gaels the lead.
Salvetti now leads Saint Mary's with four assists on the season, while Schexnayder is tied for second with three.
FINAL SMC 1 - 0 PEPP
Kicking off the second half of action, a dangerous look from Brooklyn Smith nearly doubled the Gaels' lead, but the strike ricocheted off the post. Saint Mary's continued to create multiple opportunities, recording nine shots on the half, but could not convert their chances.
In goal, Kate Plachy continued her outstanding season with a stellar performance, tallying five saves against the Waves to maintain the clean sheet. The win marked the sophomore goalkeeper's 10th shutout of the season, ranking her third in program history, and her 16th career shutout, placing her fourth all time. Full game efforts from defenders Molly Silva, Madison Casado and Amari Hicks joined by midfielders Savannah Schwarze and Maddie Lucas, along with forward Ashlyn Vaughn all contributed to the Gael's big win.
LOOKING AHEAD
Riding the momentum of two back to back road victories, Saint Mary's returns home to take on Pacific on Saturday, November 1st at 3:00 PM. The game can be streamed live on ESPN+ and tickets can be purchased at smcgaels.com.
