MSOC | Gaels Battle Back for Second Consecutive Match in 2-1 Victory Over Omaha

OMAHA, Neb. — For the second consecutive match, the Saint Mary's men's soccer team found itself battling from behind, this time completing a 2-1 comeback victory over Omaha. Sophomore midfielders Cameron Kobey and Drew Shoji each found the back of the net in the final 14 minutes to complete the come-from-behind effort.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Saint Mary's generated the first opportunity of the match as Carl Emil Lauridsen fired a shot that was blocked out for a corner in the sixth minute. Omaha responded shortly after, finding the back of the net in the 16th minute to take a 1-0 lead. The Mavericks maintained the advantage through the remainder of the opening half, as they outshot the Gaels 5-3 through the first 45 minutes.

Luke Shaefer came out of the break hungry for an equalizer and created multiple dangerous opportunities, finishing the match with five shot attempts. The Gaels turned up the pressure offensively, outshooting Omaha 10-9 in the second half. The Omaha defense held the Gaels off the board until the 77th minute, when Henry Beatty laid off a ball to Talan Rochelle, who found Kobey inside the 18-yard box. Kobey turned and fired to the bottom right corner of the goal to level the match at 1-1.

With momentum on their side, the Gaels continued to press for the go-ahead goal. Less than nine minutes later, Saint Mary's struck again, as Rafael Suarez intercepted a pass in the midfield, and threaded a pass forward to Henry Beatty. Beatty eluded a defender and laid a pass off to Drew Shoji, who darted another 60 yards before firing a shot that found the back of the net in the 86th minute to give the Gaels their first lead of the game.

Full 90-minute efforts from Surafel Abebe, Talan Rochelle, Rafael Suarez, Max Owusu-Antwi, Eemil Laamanen, and goalkeeper Tommy Davis, who also made two saves, helped secure the 2-1 victory.

GAME NOTES

Saint Mary's came from behind for the second consecutive match, overcoming a 1-0 halftime deficit to earn the 2-1 victory. The result brings their season record to 2-4-2.
Cameron Kobey scored his team-leading fourth goal of the season and has now found the back of the net in back-to-back matches and in four of his last five contests.
Drew Shoji recorded the first goal of his career and the game-winner in the 86th minute.
Talan Rochelle and Henry Beatty each recorded his second assists of the season on Kobey's equalizer.
Saint Mary's scored multiple goals for the third consecutive match, and have not been shutout since the opening week of the season.
Tommy Davis started and played the full 90 minutes for the second time this season, recording a season-high two saves and picking up his first collegiate victory.
