EL MACERO, Calif. - Saint Mary's carried their momentum from their second place finish earlier in the week at the Tiger Invitational and finished day one of the El Macero Classic in a tie for third place at five-under. The defending champs heated up on the back nine combining for nine birdies to climb into the third spot on the team leaderboard.
Aidan Lee and Connor Reis recorded a pair of 70's to lead the way, rounding out the top-ten individually. Zack Missigman was also in red figures at one-under-par while Go Nakatsukasa battled through an up and down scorecard to finish even par. Nakatsukasa matched his four birdies with four bogeys but the Gaels scored well in the closing holes to move into third place along with fellow WCC member Pacific.
Missigman put together an impressive run to conclude his round with three straight birdies from 15-17 before a par on 18 that helped him finish one-under. Similar to teammate Nakatsukasa, individual James Williams also finished even par on the day and sits in a massive group tied in 20th. Williams led Saint Mary's with five birdies on the day but some costly bogeys brought him back down to even par.
With mistakes to a minimum and quality playing conditions, the Gaels have put themselves in a great spot to contend on day two of the event and keep pace with UC San Diego who lead at seven-under. In second place is San Diego at six-under as the Gaels and Pacific Tigers round out the top-three at five-under-par. They are slated to go off of the first tee starting at 9:40 AM.
