WTEN | Gaels Geared Up for 2026 Campaign, Set For Cal Winter Invite Starting on Friday, January 16th

MORAGA, Calif. - The Saint Mary's women's tennis team will start their spring season this Friday at the annual Cal Winter Invite. The Gaels will compete through the weekend before making their home debut against Dominican on Friday, January 23rd. Their 2026 spring schedule features 13 non-conference matches including road contests with Sacramento State, Cal Poly, Fresno State and a return match with Grand Canyon on February 28th. West Coast Conference action is slated to start on March 22nd with a road matchup against Pacific before the Gaels make their home WCC debut against Washington State on March 28th.
Saint Mary's won just one conference match in what has been a highly competitive West Coast Conference over recent years. The Gaels did get a taste of postseason action though as they competed in the UTR Sports NIT Championship for the second consecutive season. There, they went 1-1 suffering a 4-1 defeat to 48th ranked Charlotte before a clean sweep of Northern Illinois to end their 2025 season.
Head coach Katharina Winterhalter and her squad were picked to finish sixth in this year's WCC Preseason Poll, announced earlier this month on January 8th. Winterhalter returned five members from the 2025 squad including seniors Tiana Fox, Iman Khan and Madison Weekley. The trio have combined for eight seasons of competition with the program dating back to 2023. The Gaels also added a pair of junior transfers in Elif Tuana Gunal and Priya Nelson. Gunal comes to Moraga from Missouri State where she competed in two seasons and was a freshman standout for the Lady Bears whereas Nelson was an ITA Scholar-Athlete at Alabama over her two years.
Saint Mary's last made the WCC Tournament in 2024 and recorded their last conference tournament victory in 2018. Full schedule information can be found at smcgaels.com. Be sure to follow your Gaels on Facebook, Instagram, and X to get all the latest Saint Mary's athletics updates and information.
