BERKELEY, Calif. – Saint Mary's completed a successful weekend at the Cal Winter Invite featuring standout individual performances and SMC debuts from Sophie Stanton and Elif Tuana Gunal. On day one, Stanton and Gunal made their SMC debuts in doubles play, teaming up with Tiana Fox and Madison Weekley. Both duos suffered defeats to Stanford and Cal Poly but Saint Mary's bounced back with three singles victories featuring Gunal, Sofia Daryaie and Madison Weekley. Gunal picked up her first win as a Gael in a three-set thriller, winning the second and third set 6-4 6-2 to defeat Amy Leather from Cal Poly. Daryaie and Weekley rounded out the first day with wins over Aspen Chung and Anushree Shekhera from Cal Poly as the Gaels went 3-2 in singles play.
Day two featured standout performances in the doubles play as Saint Mary's went a perfect 3-0 with match wins over Cal Poly. Tiana Fox/Iman Khan paired up to win 6-2 over Amy Leather/Sarah MacCallum while Sofia Daryaie/Elif Tuana Gunal and Sophie Stanton/Madison Weekley won their matches 7-5 and 6-4 to round out day two. Gunal was the lone singles win for the Gaels on Sunday as she defeated Natalie Lynch from Cal Poly in straight sets, 6-2 6-4. Gunal and Daryaie earned another doubles victory to end the weekend defeating Aspen Chung/Tia Bonita Jakupovic-Kljako from Cal Poly 6-4.
