MORAGA, Calif. - Saint Mary's fought tooth-and-nail Thursday night against the Washington State Cougars but fell in overtime fashion 64-68 to snap their two-game win streak. The Gaels held a three-point lead going into the fourth quarter but both teams traded free throws in the closing seconds to force an extra five-minute period for their first overtime game of conference play. Washington State was able to get to the foul line though, finishing 7-for-10 in OT to pull away for the four-point victory and their third in WCC action.
Abigail Shoff led Saint Mary's with 18 points, scoring 14 over the first twenty minutes of the game. Jada Hunter came alive in the second half to finish with 15 points off the bench while Mauriana Hashemian-Orr and Melesungu Afeaki combined for 12 points to aid in 33 bench points for Saint Mary's. The Gaels fall to 2-4 in WCC play and will host Santa Clara this Saturday at 5:00 PM to conclude their two-game week.
FIRST HALF SMC 30-30 WSU
After scoring the first four points of the game, Saint Mary's suffered an early cold spell that allowed Washington State to take a seven-point lead midway through the opening quarter. The Gaels cut it to three after a layup from Hashemian-Orr but the Cougars got to the line and hit a jumper to give them a 16-10 advantage after the first.
Saint Mary's did a good job settling in though on both ends of the floor, shooting 47% from the field in the second quarter while also turning over the Cougars six times to outscore them 20-14. Abigail Shoff came alive with 12 points in the second quarter including two three-pointers as Saint Mary's knotted the game at 30 going into the half. The Gaels were +7 in points off turnovers and +6 in second chance points as they got right back into the game with the second half to play.
END OF REGULATION SMC 57-57 WSU
Saint Mary's finished 50% from the field in the third quarter and did a great job on the Cougars offense again, holding them to just 33% with four made field goals. Add another six forced turnovers and the Gaels gave themselves a 47-44 lead heading into the fourth with ten minutes to play. Edie Clarke had a massive ten minutes with a solo 7-0 scoring run to put the Gaels up five points under the 7-minute mark. She finished the quarter with seven points on a perfect 4-for-4 shooting.
The fourth quarter has proven to be kryptonite for Saint Mary's though this season and it was again Thursday night as Washington State overcame a five-point deficit with 2:58 remaining to force overtime. The Cougars got stop after stop to tie the game at 55 and then hit two free throws with 27 seconds remaining to take a 57-55 lead. Saint Mary's answered though off a strong baseline drive from Mauriana Hashemian-Orr who took the contact and went to the line for a pair. The Portland native hit both clutch free throws with four seconds remaining to tie the game at 57 and force overtime.
FINAL OVERTIME SMC 64-68 WSU
Poor shooting carried into the overtime period for both teams but the Cougars got to the line and went 4-for-6 at the stripe to pull away late. They took a four-point lead after a layup from Mackenzie Chatfield with 1:47 remaining and then went on to make four free throws to ice the game for the eventual 68-64 victory. Saint Mary's took care of the ball with their second lowest turnover total of the season but a cold fourth quarter and a -21 rebounding margin proved the difference for the Cougars.
