LIHU'E, Kaua'i - Challenging conditions out on the Ocean Course set up a difficult first round at the John Burns Intercollegiate on Thursday. Just three teams finished under-par over the first 18 holes as Saint Mary's carded a 286 (+6) to sit in 13th place after round one.
Senior Mitchell Hoey got off to a great start in the morning, birding two of his first three holes. Aside from a pair of double-bogeys for the De La Salle graduate, Hoey was quite solid with a 70 even-par opening round. The remaining four counting scores for Saint Mary's all posted 72 (+2) to put the team at six-over. Avery Lazarski and Inigo Izuzquiza recorded crucial birdies over their last two holes to sneak the Gaels into the top-15 while redshirt freshman Sam Baumuller had an eagle on the par-4 16th to help get him back to two-over for the day.
LMU leads the tournament field at 4-under with #32 Texas A&M and #42 Long Beach State to follow in second and third place respectively. The Gaels are the third best WCC team after the opening round with Santa Clara in ninth place and San Francisco in 19th to round out the field.
The complete first round leaderboard can be found HERE or at smcgaels.com.
Round two will begin in a shotgun format at 11:00 AM pacific time. Be sure to follow your Gaels on Facebook, Instagram, and X to get all the latest Saint Mary's athletics updates and information.
