THIEVERY ON THE BASEPATHS
Saint Mary's (8-5) leads the West Coast Conference with 23 stolen bases, doing so on 26 attempts. Hannah Ferguson and Sam Buckley lead the charge there, each swiping five successfully on five attempts, while Camille Lara is a perfect 4-4 on stolen base attempts. The Gaels stole just 33 bases all of last season, but led the conference with 104 swiped bags in 2024, the last time the team made an NCAA Regional.
STARS OF THE NUTTER
The Gaels had quite a few standouts in Cathedral City last weekend when taking part in the 2026 Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic. Offensively, no one shined brighter than Braxton Brown. The junior flexed her muscle to the tune of seven hits (six of the extra base variety), three home runs and nine RBI. Joining Brown with seven hits was Camille Lara, who logged a team-best .538 average amongst regular starters, while also recording her team-high fourth outfield assist. Sam Buckley joined Brown in the home run derby of a weekend, also blasting three over the fence, while Hannah Ferguson flashed her wheels with a pair of triples. In the circle, Odhi Vasquez pitched every game of the five game tournament, helping shore up the Gaels pitching staff over a very long weekend featuring five games in three days.
ABOUT THE OPPONENTS
The Gaels will see Kennesaw State, Louisiana and 15th ranked Texas A&M at the TAMU Invitational. The Owls of KSU are off to a 3-9 start after winning just 12 games all of last season. Selena Collins, a Texas A&M alum and hall of famer, is in her first year at the helm of Kennesaw State, but retained her star catcher, Macie Howes, who is hitting .486 with 14 runs driven in. This will be the first ever meeting between these two programs.
Louisiana has proven to be one of the most impressive mid-major programs in the country, never suffering a losing season in their time as a DI program (1982). Second-year head coach and Ragin' Cajun alum Alyson Habetz has won 40 of her first 71 games as Louisiana's cead coach. The offense has been impressive in the early going for Louisiana, led by freshman Haley Hart, who is batting .420 with four home runs and 17 RBI. The Gaels and Ragin' Cajuns have never met before in program history.
Ranked 15th in the country in the latest USA Softball Poll, Texas A&M brings a 10-6 record into the TAMU Invitational after going 3-3 at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic. While this is the first all-time meeting between the Gaels and Aggies, fourth-year head coach Trisha Ford is no stranger to Saint Mary's, having graduated from SMC in 2000 and serving as the program's head coach in 2002 and 2003. The Aggies will take on Houston, Kennesaw State twice and Louisiana before getting their chance to take on the Gaels under the lights Saturday night at David Diamond. Boasting a prolific offense in the early goings, Texas A&M boasts a top-25 ranking hits, home runs, RBI and on-base percentage while sitting just outside the top-25 in batting average and slugging percentage. The most feared bat in their lineup belongs to Oklahoma State transfer Micaela Wark. The Frisco, Texas native has already left the yard eight times in 16 games and leads the team with 21 RBI. Saint Mary's will be the second WCC foe that A&M squares off with, after beating LMU 7-1 at the Mary Nutter last week.
