SB | Gaels Outlast Rams for First Road Win of the Season
3/19/2026 9:58:00 PM | Softball
FORT COLLINS, Colo. — The Saint Mary's softball team logged their first true road win of the season, defeating the Rams of Colorado State this season for the second time, 14-13. With 18 wins now under their belt, the Gaels picked up a rare first this late into the season, their first true road win, but with three more on the road scheduled this weekend ahead of conference play, they'll look to keep that momentum away from home rolling.
Hannah Ferguson led the offensive outpouring for the Gaels, going 4-for-5 at the top of the order, scoring three times, driving in five, and coming up just a double short of the cycle. Averie Prescott chipped in three RBI, while Braxton Brown added two more RBIs to her time high tally. The Gaels did have to go three deep for their pitching staff today, but it was starter Odhi Vasquez who still picked up the W, now owning nine of the Gaels 18 victories this season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Gaels (18-10) jumped ahead to an early 2-0 lead, plating a run in each of the first two frames, one driven in by Averie Prescott, and the other by Hannah Ferguson. The Rams (13-15) would draw level in the third, before the Gaels hung up a five spot in the top of the fourth to give them a lead they would not relinquish for the remainder of the contest. In that fourth inning, Hannah Ferguson would log a two RBI triple, tying her for most triples in program history with 12, while Braxton Brown would drive in two with a single, bringing her team leading RBI total to 26.
Colorado State continued to chip away at the deficit, but the Gaels seemed to always have a response, extending the lead to 11-4 midway through the sixth. The Rams really began to rally in the bottom of the sixth, however, going through three Gael pitchers in the frame, before Ella Thurman recorded the final out, keeping the Gaels ahead 11-9. A bases loaded walk to Sam Buckley, and a two RBI single from Avery Prescott would give Saint Mary's some breathing room, but a pair of seventh inning homers from the Rams put them within one run with just one out. Unphased, Ella Thurman would set down the next two batters in just five pitches to close out the contest with a 14-13 Gaels victory.
GAME NOTES
The Gaels will now head about 30 miles southeast to Greeley, Colorado to open up a three game series with the Northern Colorado Bears. That series opens with a single game tomorrow at 12 PM PST, followed by a doubleheader Saturday, starting at 10 AM.
