APPROACHING A TON OF HISTORY
Saint Mary's Softball is already off to its best start in program history, currently sitting at 21-10, and has achieved its longest home winning streak, winning 11 straight at Cottrell Field, dating back to last season. Currently, the Gaels are riding a seven game win streak, their longest since 2010. The program0record long win streak is nine consecutive wins, which spanned between the end of the 1992 and the start of the 1993 season. The Gaels could tie that record by winning the first two contests against the Tigers this week, and could break it with a sweep of Pacific.
Individually there are a few program career and single season records in reach. Sam Buckley needs just two home runs to hit 26 for her career and break Sarah Lira's longstanding program home run record. Hannah Ferguson needs just one more triple to run her career tally to 13, a new program record, and two more to move to nine this season, a new single season program record. Ferguson also needs just seven more stolen bases to become the program's career record holder in that category. Team RBI leader Braxton Brown needs just 11 more runs driven in to set a new single season record of 42. In the circle, Odhi Vasquez needs just six more wins and four more shutouts to set the program mark in both of those categories.
ABOUT THE TIGERS
For the third consecutive season, the Saint Mary's Gaels will open conference play by taking on the Pacific Tigers. The Tigers enter West Coast Conference action with a record 12-20, but ride some momentum after sweeping Montana on the road in a three game series last week, one of seven like opponents that both the Pacific and Saint Mary's have faced in non-conference play. Now in her second season at the helm, Head Coach Sam Duran-Kukuk has currently matched her longest winning streak at three in a row, and will look to extend it against the Gaels. The Tigers are led by a pair of senior outfielders near the top of their order, leadoff hitter Olivia Silvestre and three hole hitter Allie Capello. Silvestre checks in this week with a .344 average and a team-best 1.027 OPS due in large part to her team-high 13 doubles. Capello leads the tea with a .347 average, 35 hits and 22 RBI. Paired with sophomore ace Alexa Lewis (5-4 3.14 ERA 53 Ks 24 BB), the Tigers have a chance to challenge the top dogs in the WCC this year. The Tigers lead the all-time series against the Gaels, 49-23, however, the Gaels have won nine of the last 12 meetings.
