SB | Gaels Open Conference Play with Run Rule Win Over Pacific
3/27/2026 8:24:00 PM | Softball
MORAGA, Calif. — For the third consecutive year, the Saint Mary's softball team opened its conference slate with a victory over the Pacific Tigers, besting their rivals from the east 9-1 in six innings at Cottrell Field on Friday. The win extends the Gaels' season-long win streak to eight in a row, and their program record home win streak to 12 straight dating back to last season.
Six of the Gaels' nine starters recorded at least a hit, with four different players recording multiple hits (Hannah Ferguson, Camille Lara, Alex Cutonilli and Mia Zabat). Ferguson, Lara and Zabat each scored twice, while Cutonilli drove in two. Braxton Brown once again led the Gaels in the runs driven in category, logging four RBI to add to her team-high total. In the circle, Odhi Vasquez went the distance, allowing just one unearned run on two hits, while fanning six for Saint Mary's (22-10, 1-0 West Coast Conference).
HOW IT HAPPENED
Despite being held hitless in the first, the Pacific Tigers (12-21, 0-1 WCC) struck first in this one on a walk and a pair of defensive miscues. That was all that Gael ace Odhi Vasquez would allow, surrendering just four more base runners over the next five frames, rolling a pair of double plays, and striking out six to keep traffic clear from the basepaths for the remainder of the contest.
In the bottom of the third, the Gaels opened up their scoring, when Mia Zabat and Hannah Ferguson led off the inning with back-to-back single, and, with two outs, Braxton Brown charged a pitch over the left centerfield fence to give Saint Mary's their first lead of the game, 3-1. The Gaels would scratch two more across in the fifth on a pair of Tiger errors, before adding four more in the sixth. In that sixth inning, the Gaels would put the first five runners on, including an RBI knock from Hannah Ferguson, and a bases-loaded two RBI double from Alex Cutonilli. Braxton Brown then stepped up and lifted a ball to center field, deep enough to score Camille Lara and end the game in run-rule fashion, 9-1.
