MORAGA, Calif. — Saint Mary's Softball tied its longest winning streak in program history on Saturday, defeating the Pacific Tigers, 6-4, in comeback fashion to move to 2-0 on the weekend and in West Coast Conference Play. The Gaels will now look for the series sweep on Sunday, as well as a chance to set a new program record for consecutive wins.
Earning her first start of the weekend, sophomore Kiah Silva had a stellar day offensively, going 3-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBI. Again, the top three spots in the lineup did their jobs as table setters, as Hannah Ferguson, Camille Lara and Alex Cutonilli all tallied two hits. Ella Thurman pitched the final five innings of relief, allowing just one run on four hits en route to her fourth victory of the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
After falling behind early yesterday, the Gaels (23-10, 2-0 WCC) struck first in game two of three games set with Pacific (12-22, 0-2 WCC), with a three spot in the second. Saint Mary's loaded the bases in that frame, bringing Kiah Silva to the plate, who ripped a single down the right field line, plating two. Hannah Ferguson would then plate Silva with a double and the Gaels were off and running, 3-0 through two frames. The Tigers responded with a three run blast to knot things up in the top of the third, chasing starter Mia Nishikawa from the game, and scored the go-ahead run off of bullpen arm Ella Thurman. That, however, would be the only run Thurman would allow in her five innings of work, allowing the Gaels to stage a comeback.
Saint Mary's would knot things up in the bottom of the fourth, as Silva would go from run provider to table setter, leading off the frame with a triple, and scoring on a Mia Zabat double. Then, in the fifth, Alex Cutonilli and Braxton Brown would lead off with back-to-back singles, with Brown's being booted in right field and getting to the wall, scoring Cutonilli and giving Saint Mary's the lead. Brown would then score on a pinch hit RBI knock from Victoria Castillo, providing an additional insurance run. Thurman would work around an error and a pair of singles over the final two frames to hang up two more zeroes and salt away the victory.
GAME NOTES
The finale between the Tigers and Gaels will be played tomorrow, Sunday, March 29, starting at noon at Cottrell Field.
