SB | Gaels and Bulldogs Split Pair of Offensive Showings to Open Silicon Valley Invitational
3/7/2026 9:56:00 PM | Softball
SAN JOSE, Calif. — The Saint Mary's softball team split its doubleheader against the Fresno State Bulldogs, dropping game one 9-3 before responding with a 9-4 victory in game two. The doubleheader marked the opening games for the Gaels at the Silicon Valley Invitational, hosted by San Jose State, that will wrap up tomorrow.
Out of the nine hole, shortstop Mia Zabat was brilliant at the plate, logging four total hits and driving in four runs. Braxton Brown and Lauren Tran each added three hits over the doubleheader, with Brown driving in two, and Tran scoring twice. Odhi Vasquez went the distance in game two, logging her team leading sixth win of the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Game One | Fresno State 9, Saint Mary's 3
Saint Mary's (14-8) was only outhit by a narrow 6-5 margin against Fresno State (10-8) in game one today, but the Gaels tallied five singles, while four of the Bulldogs' six hits were of the extra base variety. Paired three Gael defensive miscues, Fresno State scratched across nine runs, two of which came across unearned.
The Gaels were down to their final out in risk of dropping the game via run rule in the sixth, but struck for three runs on a nice two out rally. Taylor Lane earned a pinch hit walk to start things off, and Hannah Ferguson re-entered to run for her. Alex Cutonilli slashed a single through the left side, and advanced to second on a late throw to third in an attempt to catch Ferguson. With two in scoring position, Gael RBI leader Braxton Brown drove in two more with a single and advanced to second on the throw to the plate, Sam Buckley pinch ran for Brown, and scored on the very next pitch on an Averie Prescott RBI hit, her sixth knock of the week, but that would be the end of the Gaels scoring. Fresno State added one more insurance run in the seventh, and the Gaels were retired in the bottom half to draw things to a close.
Game Two | Saint Mary's 9, Fresno State 4
After a combined seven runs were scored over the final two innings of game one, the offense was a bit harder to come by for both squads to start game two. Gaels starter Odhi Vasquez surrendered the first run of the game in the second inning, but the Gaels responded in the third, when Alex Cutonilli ripped a two out triple to right, scoring Mia Zabat, and then came in to score herself on and overthrow to the plate.
Fresno State would draw level again in the bottom of the third, but the Gaels would take a lead they would not relinquish in the fourth. Averie Prescott led off the inning with a walk, and was pinch run for by Ruby Cuen Camacho. Back-to-back singles from freshmen Lauren Tran and Janessa Parras would plate Cuen Camacho, and a double by Zabat would score both of them, making it 5-2. Tran and Zabat would add more RBI on in the fifth, and Vasquez worked a 1-2-3 in the bottom half to send the game into the sixth with Saint Mary's leading 9-2. The Bulldogs would scratch two across in the bottom of the seventh, but the deficit was too much to overcome, as the Gaels finished off the hard earned twin bill split.
