SB | Gaels Drop Two Against the Spartans, Finish Out Week 3-3

SAN JOSE, Calif. — The Saint Mary's softball team fell into early deficits in both ends of its doubleheader against San Jose State, and were unable to claw back in either, falling 5-1 and 6-2 on Sunday. The Gaels finish off their week with a 0.500 record, after winning both contests in their Tuesday twinbill and splitting with Fresno State yesterday.
Hannah Ferguson led the Gaels with three hits in the Sunday pair, scoring a run and driving in another. Madeline Haun worked a solid four frames in game one, surrendering just one run in that one to lead the Saint Mary's pitching efforts.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Game One | San Jose State 5, Saint Mary's 1
Seven pitches into the game, and Saint Mary's took its first lead in this one, with Hannah Ferguson leading off the game with a bunt single, advancing to second on an Alex Cutonilli ground out, and scoring on a two out Braxton Brown knock. That would be it for the Gaels' offense however, with San Jose State hanging up six straight zeroes on the scoreboard thereafter.
The Spartans struck for two runs in the first and two runs in the second, prompting Gaels' head coach Sonja Garnett to go to the bullpen and call upon her freshman Madeline Haun. Haun was stellar in four innings of work, allowing 10 base runners (seven hits, two walks, one hit batter) but stranding nine of those, surrendering just one run. Unfortunately, the Gaels' offense couldn't rally behind her, falling 5-1.
Game Two | San Jose State 6, Saint Mary's 2
The Gaels once again found themselves in a three run deficit through two innings, this time, falling behind 3-0. Over the next two frames, the Gaels clawed to within one run, first on a one out RBI single from Hannah Ferguson in the third, plating Lauren Tran, followed by an RBI sacrifice bunt by Tran in the fourth.
Odhi Vasquez pitched the final 4.1 innings, and, after striking out her first batter with the bases loaded to end the second, tossed a scoreless third, fourth and fifth innings. In the sixth, however, the Spartans stranded the tying and go-ahead runs in scoring position in the top half, and added three massive insurance runs in the bottom half to salt away the 6-2 win.
GAME NOTES
Saint Mary's will return home for a three game set against the Montana Grizzlies on Thursday, March 12 and Friday, March 13. The Gaels and Grizz will take part in a doubleheader Thursday and a single game finale Friday.
