SB | Gaels Pick Up Program Record Win Number 31 in Series Opener vs Oregon State

MORAGA, Calif. — The Gaels' historic 2026 softball campaign continued on Friday afternoon, as Saint Mary's defeated Oregon State 5-3 to move to 31-12 for the year. The 31 wins are the most by any team in program history, and also marked the Gaels' 16th straight victory at home.
Braxton Brown led the Gaels offensively with a pair of RBI doubles, driving in three in total for the contest. Camille Lara scored a pair of runs, working two walks at the top of the Gaels' order, while Odhi Vasquez tossed the complete game, striking out eight en route to her 17th victory of the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Saint Mary's (31-12, 6-1 West Coast Conference) struck first in the back-and-forth contest against Oregon State (17-27, 5-5 WCC) in the bottom of the first. Camille Lara led off the frame with a walk, and, with two outs, Braxton Brown blooped a Texas leaguer into shallow center, plating Lara while hustling out a double.
Oregon State took its first lead in the second with a two spot, but after Hannah Ferguson made a catch in right center and doubled a runner off of second to end the top of the third, the Gaels pulled back in front in the bottom half. Mia Zabat barreled a single out to left to lead off the home half, and was bunted to second by Lara. Again with two outs, the middle of the Gael lineup provided, as Alex Cutonilli singled Lara home, and then scored on another Brown double that was anything but a bloop, but rather a rocket out off of the right centerfield fence.
Again, however, Oregon State would draw level in the top of the fifth, but in the bottom half, the Gaels would take their final lead of the game. Lara and Ferguson would start the inning off with a walk and single respectively, and found themselves on second and third with one out. Brown hit a soft ground ball to shortstop, with Lara breaking on contact, but the throw was dropped by the Beaver first baseman, allowing Ferguson to score as well, pushing the Gaels ahead by multiple runs for the first and only time in the game, 5-3.
Odhi Vasquez battled through some adversity in this one, working around five walks and a pair of home runs surrendered, but stayed laser focussed to work the 137-pitch complete game victory. Vasquez really shined over the final two frames, striking out three and stranding three base runners to thwart any hopes of an Oregon State comeback.
