SB | Gaels Secure Third Straight West Coast Conference Series Win This Year, Defeat Oregon State 8-3

MORAGA, Calif. — The Saint Mary's softball team won its third West Coast Conference series in as many tries this season, defeating Oregon State 8-3 to move to 2-0 in the three game set. Dating back to last season, the Gaels have now won five straight conference series, and continue to add to their impressive home game win streak, now having won 17 straight within the friendly confines of Cottrell Field.
Alex Cutonilli continued her dominance in WCC play, going 2-for-4 with a homer and four runs driven in. Hannah Ferguson added three hits and two runs scored to go along with an RBI, while Braxton Brown smashed a two-run home run to tie Sam Buckley's single season RBI record from a year ago. In the circle, Madeline Haun was lights out through the first five innings, earning her seventh win of the season, while Odhi Vasquez slammed the door shut in the sixth and seventh for her fifth save of the year.
HOW IT HAPPENED
After Madeline Haun worked a scoreless opening frame, Camille Lara led off the bottom of the first with a walk, and stole second. With two away, Braxton Brown uncorked on a 2-0 pitch over the heart of the plate, sending it over the left field fence to make it 2-0 in the early going. Haun surrendered just two singles through her first three innings of work, and in the bottom of the third, the Gaels doubled their lead at 4-0 when Hannah Ferguson slapped a one out single back up the middle, followed by another homer, this time off the bat of Alex Cutonilli into the trees beyond the left field scoreboard.
Haun worked a 1-2-3 fourth frame, but the Beavers began to battle back in the fifth, cutting the deficit in half, on four hits and a walk, resulting in a pair of runs. The Gaels were the beneficiaries of an infield error committed by Oregon State in the bottom of the fifth, eventually resulting in an unearned run coming across on an RBI single from Taylor Lane. Oregon State's Morgan Howey would hammer the first pitch of the sixth inning over the left field fence, as Haun would give way to Odhi Vasquez. Vasquez would load the bases, but induced an inning-ending pop up, stranding three Beaver runners.
In the bottom of the sixth, Saint Mary's head coach Sonja Garnett called for a pair of pinch hitters against a new Oregon State arm to start the inning, as Lauren Tran led off with a single, followed by a walk to Kiah Silva. Tran would come in to score on a Ferguson double, while Silva and Ferguson would score on a two RBI hit from Cutonilli, giving Saint Mary's their largest lead of the game at 8-3. Vasquez picked up the first two outs with ease, but allowed the next two batters to reach with two away. It was, however, another signature Odhi Vasquez strikeout that ended the game for her fifth save of the season.
