SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The Saint Mary's baseball team got back in the win column in West Coast Conference play, defeating San Diego 10-4 Friday night in a statement conference win. The Gaels did it on both sides of the field, tallying ten runs off 15 hits while also holding San Diego (15-24, 7-9) to four runs including a 3.2 inning save from junior southpaw Cam Staton.
Saint Mary's (24-17, 9-7) and San Diego were tied at one after the opening frame but the Gaels hung a four-spot in the second with clutch RBI hits from Jared Mettam, Tanner Griffith and Makoa Sniffen to take a 5-1 lead. Senior right hander John Damozonio pitched into the sixth inning to earn his conference leading seventh win of the season. The San Jose native allowed four runs over his 5.1 innings before Cam Staton closed the game with 3.2 innings of work for his second save of the season.
The top and bottom of the order was stellar for the Gaels including a game high three hits Makoa Sniffen and Jared Mettam. Hitters 7-9 in the lineup combined for seven hits and two RBI, doing a fantastic job of turning the lineup over for the likes of Griffith, Castellanos and Sniffen. Their six-run victory over the Toreros was their largest since 2023 when Saint Mary's beat San Diego 17-8 in the WCC Tournament.
HOW IT HAPPENED
After a run a piece in the first inning, Saint Mary's plated four runs in the second to take a 5-1 lead and never look back. Sophomore first baseman Makoa Sniffen concluded the inning with a two-run double for his 11th of the season to give the Gaels a 5-1 lead. John Damozonio surrendered two runs in the bottom of the second but then hit a nice groove, completing three scoreless innings over the third, fourth and fifth.
Sniffen added to the team's lead with a solo home run to the deepest part of the yard, going down as his team leading ninth homer of the season. Two runs in the sixth and two runs in the eighth would get Saint Mary's to ten runs for its 13th game of the season with double-digit runs. Mettam and Griffith had more RBI hits in the sixth and then the Gaels put together tough at-bat after tough at-bat in the eighth to plate two more runs. Griffith scored freshman infielder Ian Josephson with a sacrifice fly before Diego Castellanos singled home Cody Kashimoto in a nine-pitch AB for his second hit of the night.
Damozonio departed midway through the sixth for Cam Staton but he would earn his seventh win of the season. Staton was stellar in his relief outing, recording a game high seven strikeouts, just one off his season high as a Gael. He would record his second save with his 3.2 scoreless innings of relief, allowing just two hits in the outing to seal the 10-4 victory for Saint Mary's.
