SAN DIEGO — The Saint Mary's softball team opened its fourth straight West Coast Conference series this year with a W, defeating the San Diego Toreros 2-0 on Friday night. The conference-leading Gaels scored just two runs in the contest, both in the first three frames, but that was more than enough for the win, with Odhi Vasquez working her fourth complete game shutout of the season.
In going the distance, Vasquez surrendered six hits and nine total baserunners, but stranded all nine while fanning four. Alex Cutonilli drove in both runs for the Gaels, one on a sacrifice fly, plating Hannah Ferguson following a triple, and one on a solo blast.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Gaels (34-12, 9-1 WCC) hit the scoreboard before the lights at Reggie Smith Softball Complex could even get warm. Hannah Ferguson laced a one out triple to left center, breaking the single season program record with her ninth of the season, and subsequently scored on a deep fly ball to left center off the bat of Alex Cutonilli. Cutonilli doubled the lead for the Gaels with a solo shot to dead center in the top of the third. That was all the offense that the Gaels could muster up, but with Odhi Vasquez working in the circle, it was more than enough for the win over USD (17-26, 3-7 WCC).
Vasquez allowed the first two Torero base runners to reach in the bottom of the first, before retiring the next seven in a row. She would load the bases in the third, but tiptoed out of danger, helping her own cause by recording a put out at the plate on a passed ball, to eventually strand the paths full of Toreros. That was the most tumultuous inning for the Gaels, as Vasquez cruised through the final four frames, earning her WCC-best 18th victory.
