SB | Offense Catches Fire, Pitching Stays Red-Hot as Gaels Earn Run-Rule Victory Over Toreros, 11-0

SAN DIEGO — The Saint Mary's softball team recorded its second shutout in as many days on Saturday afternoon at the Reggie Smith Softball Complex, but this time, its offense left nothing to chance, preserving the shutout and victory with an 11 run explosion, 11-0 over San Diego. The first-place Gaels have now secured their seventh straight West Coast Conference series win dating back to last season, and have run their winning streak against the Toreros to nine consecutive victories.
Madeline Haun was lights out in the circle, tossing a complete game, one hit shutout. Haun pitched to contact, facing just three batters above the minimum and needing just 56 pitches to secure her eighth win of the year. At the top of the batting order, Camille Lara earned her second three hit ballgame in as many weeks, scoring three times as well. Alex Cutonilli also scored three times, recording a pair of hits, while Braxton Brown drove in four runs, and now stands alone as the program record holder for single season RBI with 45.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Camille Lara and Alex Cutonilli led off the game with back-to-back singles, and both scored, Lara on an RBI groundout from Hannah Ferguson, and Cutonilli on a sacrifice fly from Braxton Brown. Brown's RBI was her 42nd of the season, breaking Sam Buckley's single season RBI record from a year ago. Unlike yesterday's game, which ended at 2-0, the Gaels (35-12, 10-1 WCC) were not satisfied with a small margin of victory today, and piled on six runs in the second, two in the third and one in the fourth, to reach double-digit runs for the first time since March 21 in a 12-4 victory over Northern Colorado. Half of the runs in the second came on one swing of the bat from Brown, who cleared the basepaths with a bases loaded double, while both runs in the third came in on a two-out Ferguson two RBI double.
Madeline Haun was untouchable in the circle. The true freshman took a no-hitter into the fifth, and recorded the first two outs of the eventual final frame, before finally surrendering the lone hit of the ballgame for the Toreros (17-27, 3-8 WCC), a protective swing opposite field bloop single to left. Unfazed, Haun retired the next batter she faced to cap the complete game, one-hit shutout, the first of her young career.
GAME NOTES
Saint Mary's will look to close out the sweep tomorrow against the Toreros at 12 p.m.
