MORAGA, Calif. - The Saint Mary's men's soccer team returns to Moraga for its final home non-conference match of the season this Saturday, hosting first-year Mountain West member UC Davis at 1 p.m. The Gaels will look to carry some momentum into Saturday's contest after an unbeaten road trip last weekend including a 3-3 draw to No. 12 Creighton and a 2-1 victory over Omaha on Sunday for their second win of the season.
Saint Mary's is riding a current three-match unbeaten streak including two draws and a win, and will look to make it four consecutive with its first home win over the Aggies since a 3-1 victory in 2022. Gaels Complete Improbable Comeback Against No. 12 Creighton…
The Saint Mary's men's soccer team marched into Morrison Stadium Thursday night and erased a three-goal deficit to tie with No. 12 Creighton 3-3 in a thrilling affair. The Blue Jays scored three times in the first half, but the Gaels were able to net three goals within the final 20 minutes of the match to pull off a remarkable comeback and earn a result against a ranked team for the first time since 2023.Â
The comeback for the Gaels would start in the 70th minute with a goal from first-year Gael Carl Emil Lauridsen for his first as a Gael. Sophomore forward Henry Beatty applied some nice pressure to the Blue Jays center back to force a turnover and Lauridsen picked up the loose ball and curled a right-footed shot into the bottom corner to put Saint Mary's on the board. No more than two minutes later, Rafael Suarez would get taken down in the box off a throw-in attempt that was later reviewed and overturned for a penalty to set up the second goal. Saint Mary's midfielder Cameron Kobey would slot the penalty for his third goal of the season to make it 3-2. Â
The equalizer would come in the 80th minute off a series of headers finished off with the first collegiate goal for Beatty. Another loose ball in the attacking third would go high up in the air and first come down on the head of Kobey. Kobey simply flicked it forward towards the box where Lauridsen had another contested header and his touch would go into the box where Beatty would slip between two Creighton defenders and lob a header over the Blue Jays keeper who was caught off of his line. The improbable comeback had been complete as the Gaels tied the game at three with ten minutes remaining, helping earn its first result against a ranked team since 2023.Â
Saint Mary's Ends Road Trip Unbeaten with 2-1 Comeback Win Over Omaha…
Saint Mary's put itself behind the eight ball once again on Sunday, going down 1-0 to the Omaha Mavericks in the 16th minute. Despite the early deficit, the Gaels found late magic once again, scoring twice in the final 14 minutes to beat Omaha 2-1 and end their midwest road trip with four points. Cameron Kobey scored the first goal for Saint Mary's off a left-footed strike inside the box before Drew Shoji went on a near 50-yard solo dribble to score his first career goal and win the game for Saint Mary's in the 86th minute. Second-year Gael Tommy Davis got the start for a sick Sam Bentley and recorded a career high two saves for his first collegiate victory. Â
Saint Mary's is riding a current three-game unbeaten streak for its longest of the 2026 season and matching its longest unbeaten streak from 2025.Â
Kobey Named Department/Top Drawer Soccer Student-Athlete of the Week…
Saint Mary's men's soccer midfielder Cameron Kobey led the team with two goals and an assist in an unbeaten road trip to be named not only the department's Student-Athlete of the Week but also Top Drawer Soccer's Player of the Week, the first time winning both awards in his SMC career.Â
Kobey and the Gaels had a tall task this past weekend with a Midwest road trip against No. 12 Creightion and Summit League members Omaha. The Gaels pulled off the improbable on Thursday, scoring three times in the final 20 minutes of regulation to erase a three-goal deficit and tie No. 12 Creighton 3-3. Kobey scored the second goal for the Gaels from the penalty spot for his second converted penalty kick of the season. Just eight minutes later, Kobey floated a header pass into the box that found the head of Henry Beatty who flicked it up and over the keeper to tie the game in the 80th minute. The assist for Kobey went down as his second of the season.Â
On Sunday, Saint Mary's found themselves behind the eight ball once again after going down 1-0 in the 16th minute. Despite being held scoreless through the first 45 minutes, they struck twice in the second half to complete another comeback, but this time to earn all three points on the road. Kobey scored the equalizer in the 77th minute off a nice turn and finish inside the box before Drew Shoji netted the game-winner off a counter attack in the 86th minute to give Saint Mary's the gritty 2-1 victory. Kobey now leads the team with a career-high four goals and is tied for the team lead with two assists over his eight games played this season.Â

Saint Mary's is unbeaten against UC Davis over its last four meetings including a pair of wins in 2022 and 2023 and a 1-1 draw in Davis last season. The Gaels are 7-9-5 all-time against the Aggies dating back to 1985 and will look for their first home win over the Aggies since 2022. Â Â

UC Davis enters week five of the 2026 college soccer season winless with an overall record of 0-5-2. Despite being picked to finish third in the Mountain West Preseason Poll, the Aggies have been outscored 26-8 this season and are still in search of their first win. UC Davis has had its share of quality opponents though including No. 11 Washington and No. 1 Stanford which finished as a narrow 2-1 defeat to the top-ranked Cardinal. They are riding a current four-game skid in which they have been outscored 18-2 including a six-goal defeat to West Coast Conference member San Francisco on September 12.Â
Gabriel Sanchez leads the team offensively with three goals over his seven matches played this season while Rafael Matiello has one goal on the season after being named to the Mountain West Preseason Watchlist back on August 12. Talin Morgan has gotten the bulk of the time in goal for the Aggies with seven starts and 27 saves but Mekhai Wilson has seen time in two games this season off the bench. Dwayne Shaffer enters his 30th season as head coach for the Aggies and ranks 17th in the nation among active winningest head coaches with 269 career victories. Â
