Brittany Boyd-Jones brings a load of playing experience after a decorated collegiate career and six seasons in the WNBA. Jones joined the Gaels coaching staff in 2024 after two years with Cal State East Bay.Â
After the conclusion of her WNBA career and spending time overseas, Jones returned to Northern California and joined the coaching staff for Division II member Cal State East Bay for the 2022-23 season. Her playing career began with Cal in 2011 where she had a tremendous impact as a true freshman, being named to the Pac-12 All-Freshman team and earning All-Pac-12 Honorable Mention. Jones was one of only two freshmen to have ten steals in a single game and finished the season ranked 69th in the country and third in the Pac-12 with 2.54 steals per game.Â
As a young sophomore, Jones played a pivotal role in the team’s 32-win season and helped the Bears to their first ever Final Four appearance. They would fall to Louisville in the semi-finals and Jones ended the season averaging over 12 points, four assists and five rebounds. Jones only got better as her career continued and she would have a breakout 2013-14 season, averaging a career high 14.7 points and 6.0 assists per game. She would help the Golden Bears to a 22-win season which included a first round NCAA Tournament victory over Fordham and she was named to the All-Pac-12 First Team for the second year in a row.Â
The following season, Jones would lead Cal to the Pac-12 Tournament Championship game where they fell by just a single point to Stanford. That season she averaged 13.4 points and a career high 6.8 assists per game. The Golden Bears made another NCAA Tournament appearance and fell in the second round to Texas to end their season.Â
Jones earned her third straight First Team selection and was also a two-time All-American as she was named to the Associated Press Second Team at the conclusion of the 2015 season. Jones was also a three-time All-Pac-12 Defensive Team recipient as she was a dominant two-way player her entire career. Jones concluded her Cal career with 134 games played averaging 12.6 points, 5.5 assists and 5.9 rebounds becoming the first player in Pac-12 history to reach career totals of 1,400 points, 700 rebounds, 600 assists, and 300 steals. She also stands as the program’s all-time leader in assists and steals.   Â
Thanks to her collegiate success, Jones was selected 9th overall to the New York Liberty in the 2015 WNBA draft. She would spend five seasons in New York and be named to the WNBA All-Rookie Team in 2015 after playing in 30 games, averaging nearly seven points and shooting 40% from the field. The Liberty went 23-11 and sat atop the Eastern Conference but saw their season come to an end in the Eastern Conference Finals to the Indiana Fever, two games to one. In 2016, Jones ranked fourth in the league with 1.6 steals per game and 15th with over three assists per game. She would dish out a career high 10 assists later that season against the Dallas Wings on September 11th. Jones finished her WNBA career with 130 games played averaging 6.2 points, 3.2 rebounds, 3.9 assists and 1.4 steals. Â Â Â
