Moraga, CA - Paul Ratcliffe announced that he has resigned from his position as head coach of the Saint Mary's College women's soccer team to accept the same position at Stanford University. Ratcliffe will assume his new duties on February 24 and a search to replace him has already begun.
Ratcliffe, the 2001 West Coast Conference Co-Coach of the Year and NSCAA West Region Coach of the Year, spent five seasons at the helm of the Saint Mary's women's soccer team. Ratcliffe led the Gaels to a 55-34-7 overall record, 21-13-1 in WCC action.
The 2001 season was Ratcliffe's most successful with the Saint Mary's program. With only one senior in the starting lineup, the Gaels attained the highest national ranking for the program (7th), set a school record with a 13-game winning streak, and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
Including 2001, Ratcliffe has been named WCC Coach of the Year three times and Saint Mary's Coach of the Year, twice. He has coached 15 players to All-WCC recognition, while also developing goalkeeper Ruth Montgomery into the school's first Women's United Soccer Association (WUSA) draft pick.
Prior to being hired by Saint Mary's, Ratcliffe was an assistant coach at UCLA from 1994-97. With the Bruins, he was instrumental in their undefeated 1997 Pac-10 title and NCAA Tournament Final Eight appearance. Ratcliffe also served as interim head coach from January to August of 1996.
