
Sam Carter Bio

Sam Carter is in his first season as an assistant baseball coach at Saint Mary's College. He returns to SMC after playing four seasons in the San Diego Padres organization. Prior to his minor league career Carter began his collegiate career at Diablo Valley College playing under Larry Quirico. After one year at DVC he played three seasons for the Gaels under Jedd Soto, Gabe Zappin and Steve Roberts.
Carter began his coaching career in 2010 at Clayton Valley High School under head coach Bob Ralston. Carter helped the Eagles to a 22-5 record and the Diablo Valley Athletic League Championship title as a hitting and outfield coach. Carter was also head coach of the Clayton Valley Pony Eagles (7th-8th grades). The team went an impressive 40-4 under Carter and former SMC Gael Delaney Gallagher.
Carter signed a contract with the San Diego Padres after the 2006 season at Saint Mary's. He spent four seasons in the Padres organization and ended his career in the Texas League AA for the San Antonio Missions. During his stint with the Padres Carter achieved numerous accolades including: 2006 Rookie Ball Championship Team; 2006 Minor League Most Improved Player; Organization Player of the Month (June 2007); Mid-West League Player of the Week in (June 2007); Teammate of the Year Award 2007; California League All-Star 2008; and California League Player of the Month (June 2008).
Carter also played in Colombia, South America for the Cartejena Indios in the Colombian Professional Baseball League during the winter of 2007-2008. His team went on to win the Colombian League Championship.
