
WSOC | Gaels Play Tough On Senior Day

MORAGA, Calif. – The Saint Mary's women's soccer team battled all day on Senior Day, taking an early lead then losing it and later tying the match late, but ultimately fell to San Diego by a 3-2 score on Saturday afternoon.
Shortly before the match, SMC seniors Jessica Castillo, Stephanie Busch, Crystal Shaffie and Vicki Shimkus were honored during a senior day ceremony.
Saint Mary's opened the scoring on the day as Samantha Dion scored her team-high ninth goal of the season. The goal was assisted by a pair of freshmen in Heather Seybert and Hannah Diaz. Dion took the ball in the box on the right side and sent home the goal from about 15 yards in the 11th minute.
San Diego scored in the 18th minute on a goal by Jacey Birtcher. The score would remain tied at 1-1 at the half. At the break, USD held a 2-1 edge in shots.
USD's Birtcher scored again to give USD the 2-1 lead in the 62nd minute.
Saint Mary's tied up the match at 2-2 in the 79th minute as Vicki Shimkus chipped in a drive from Valerie LaForge. It was Shimkus' second goal of the weekend, after scoring against BYU on Thursday.
In the 82nd minute, USD had a corner kick that ended up in traffic. As SMC cleared the ball, USD's Tara Meier was there and took a long shot from 20 yards. The shot rolled just past the SMC goalkeeper Stephanie Busch for the 3-2 USD lead.
The score would remain that way until the final horn.
Both squads took six shots in the match. USD held a 4-2 edge in shots on goal.
Saint Mary's wraps up the 2014 season when it takes on Santa Clara on the road on Saturday, November 8th at 1:00 p.m.
