SAN BRUNO, Calif. — For the second straight season, No. 10 Saint Mary's littered the All-WCC awards list as nine Gaels were placed on the First, Second or Freshman Team as announced today by the conference.
In addition to making their respective teams, Saint Mary's also received four of the top honors for Co-Player, Defender, Goalkeeper, and Coach of the Year.
Anders Engebretsen, along with San Diego's Miguel Berry, was named Co-Player of the Year after posting what could be the greatest offensive season in program history. Engebretsen has 40 points thus far on 16 goals and eight assists and is just one point shy of the program record set by Juan Guarda in 1990. He was also placed on the All-WCC First Team.
Filippo Zattarin was chosen as Defender of the Year, as well as First Team All-WCC, and recorded his third straight season with an all-conference honor. The Italian was named Second Team last season and Freshman Team in 2017. This year, Zattarin helped SMC record 11 clean sheets and allow just two goals in conference play. He also had two assists to help aid the offense.
Remi Preiur grabbed his second straight WCC Goalkeeper of the Year award with his 11 shutouts, 0.60 goals-against average, and 81.8 save percentage, all of which led the conference. The redshirt senior allowed just one goal in 590 minutes during WCC play for an incredible 0.15 goals-against average. In addition, Preiur was selected to the conference's First Team.
For the second straight year and fourth time in his career, Adam Cooper was honored as the WCC Coach of the Year. Cooper's club is now 16-1 this season and recorded the first ever 7-0 conference record in the school's and WCC's history. The Gaels are 35-1-2 in their past 38 matches dating back to 2017.
Saint Mary's occupied six of the 11 First Team slots with Engebretsen, Zattarin, Prieur, Jake Rudel, Jakub Svehlik, and Sebastian Schacht earning the recognition. Selected to the Second Team were James Person and Joseph Restani while Valentin Kurz was chosen to the All-Freshman Team.
The Gaels return to the NCAA Tournament this Sunday at 1 p.m. as they host the winner of UC Santa Barbara/Cal in Moraga.
