The No. 6 Gaels defeated Utah Valley in a neutral site competition to win the Peter Johann Memorial Classic in Las Vegas.
LAS VEGAS — No. 6 Saint Mary's (7-0) continued their dominant start to the 2019 season by clinching a neutral site 2-1 win over Utah Valley and winning the Peter Johann Memorial Classic hosted by UNLV.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Anders Engebretsen got the scoring started for the Gaels in just the 13th minute by converting a penalty kick for the early 1-0 lead. The senior forward is now 4-for-4 on PK attempts this season and ranks at the top of the country in total goals with eight.
Closing in the final minutes of play, Jake Rudel tallied his second goal of the year off a pass from Anders Engebretsen in the 83rd minute. The goal proved to be the difference maker in the match as UVU also scored just 77 seconds later to cut the Gaels' lead back down to one.
Rudel led Saint Mary's with six shots in the match while Jakub Svehlik added three more as part of a 16-shot barrage against the Wolverines' goal. Goalkeeper Remi Prieur made four saves to earn his seventh win of the season.
With the win, SMC is now undefeated in their past 31 matches (27-0-4). The streak is the ninth longest all-time in Div. I NCAA history and one game behind Virginia for tying for eighth place.

THOUGHTS FROM ADAM COOPER
- "Anytime you can win two tough games on the road over the same weekend, it's a great weekend. Utah Valley is a very good team and we did well today to earn a victory and tournament championship."
- Saint Mary's returns to Moraga for a two-game homestand next week beginning with UC Davis on Thursday at 4 p.m. Links to the game, including tickets, can be found on the team's schedule page.
