LOS ANGELES — Saint Mary's (0-1) opened the spring season on the road at No. 19 USC (2-1) on Friday but fell to the Women of Troy, 4-0.
USC took the doubles point with doubles wins on courts 1 and 3. Saint Mary's tandem of Lene Mari Hovda and Gabriela Tevez nearly earned the win as the No. 3 seed but were defeated in a close match by Jaeger/Saca, 7-5. Chloe Goyette and Jordan Harris were locked up 6-6 in their match before it was called.
The Women of Troy grabbed three wins in singles play to ultimately take the dual. Hovda led No. 68 Sydney Van Alphen on Court 3 after one set, 7-6, before their match was called. Tevez also won her first set on Court 5 against Constance Branstine but was unable to finish.
Saint Mary's will stay in Los Angeles for their next match against No. 4 UCLA beginning tomorrow at noon.
