DAVIS, Calif. — The Gaels (6-14) wrapped up the Capital Classic on Sunday with games against Texas State and UC Davis.
Game 1
Texas State 5, Saint Mary's 2
The Gaels tallied more hits than the Bobcats (12-6) in the morning game but couldn't come back from an early 3-0 deficit.
SMC scored both runs in the fourth while trailing 3-0. Indya Smith delivered with a two-out double to drive in Alex Casas and Halle Sullivan to make it a one run game. Down 5-2 in the seventh, Saint Mary's managed to load the bases with two outs after a single, hit by pitch, and a walk but couldn't scratch home a run as the game ended on a flyout to center.
Hannah Chew, Casas, and Sullivan all went 2-for-3 in the loss. Sofia Earle struck out four in four innings as the starter and Vanessa Richie put down three more batters in two innings of work.
Sarah Vanderford homered for Texas State in a 1-for-3 game at the plate.
Game 2
UC Davis 13, Saint Mary's 7
Saint Mary's put up big offensive numbers in the final game of the tourney but the barnburner would go UC Davis' way in the end.
The Gaels opened the contest with three first-inning runs. Chew singled to left field to score Jayda Alaan and was followed by Casas' base hit that drove in Sullivan with two outs to make it 2-0. With Bry Waters pinch running on third, SMC successfully pulled off a double steal to score Waters and move Casas to second.
The Aggies (12-9) replied with five unanswered runs over the next four innings to retake the lead, 5-3.
In the top of the fifth, SMC put together another rally that would put them back on top. After Kenedi Lopes doubled and Casas was hit by a pitch, Julia McCormack smacked her third homer of the season to put the Gaels up, 6-5. Saint Mary's wasn't done at that point as Nikki Alexander and Alaan hit back-to-back doubles to bring in another run.
UC Davis mounted another comeback however, scoring five in the fifth and adding three more in the sixth to take the contest, 13-7. Errors proved costly for the Gaels as seven of those eight late-inning runs were unearned.
UP NEXT: SILICON VALLEY CLASSIC II
Saint Mary's will travel south for the Silicon Valley Classic hosted at San Jose State and Santa Clara next weekend. The full slate of games can be seen on the team's schedule page.
