SB | Gaels Bats Erupt to Split Doubleheader with Spartans

MORAGA, Calif. — Saint Mary's (6-6) came out swinging in the latter game of their Sunday doubleheader with San Jose State (2-4) to split the day's games and end the weekend on a high note.

GAME 1 RECAP
San Jose State 10, Saint Mary's 4

The Gaels offense jumped out early in the bottom of the first inning with Hannah Chew driving in two runs with a double to left field.

The Gaels opened the contest with solid defense and pitching from Sofia Earle until the Spartan's offense erupted in the top of the third inning. The outburst was led by Arianna Miranda's home run to deep left field which drove in three runs. The Spartans ended up with a 5-spot in the third to take a 5-2 lead.

Chew collected two more RBIs in the bottom of the third with a 2-run shot over the center field wall. The catcher went 2-for-4 in the game and drove in all four runs for SMC.

SJSU went on to add three more runs in the fifth and two in the seventh. Saint Mary's offense could not overcome the deficit but managed eight hits in the hard-fought contest. Along with Chew, Indya Smith had a strong game at the plate as she went 3-for-4 with a double and two runs scored.

Earle took the loss for Saint Mary's but was charged with only one earned run in her 2.2 innings of work due to an error in the third.

GAME 2 RECAP
Saint Mary's 7 , San Jose 5

The second game of today's doubleheader began with SMC scoring three runs in the bottom of the first inning. The Gaels took advantage of a few San Jose State miscues, including two errors in the inning, to plate three runs without recording a hit. Sasa Koria drove in the third and final run of the inning with a sacrifice fly to score Chew. Koria would finish the game with three hits and two RBIs.

Julia McCormack stretched the Gaels lead to 5-0 in the third with a two-run single. The senior plated another run in the following inning on a sac fly just before Koria singled to left field to make it a 7-0 game in the fourth.

Kayla Scott started in the circle for SMC and breezed through the first five innings with just one hit allowed. The Spartans mounted a charge in the top of the sixth when Janessa Lonzo hit a home run down the left-field line putting the Spartans on the board. SJSU went on to score five in the sixth, all with two outs, to close the gap to 7-5.

Sofia Earle came in for relief and got the Gaels out of trouble. Earle pitched a scoreless seventh to close out the win for Saint Mary's and split the doubleheader. The lefthander earned her second save of the season by pitching an inning and a third.

SMC totaled 11 hits in the win while only recording two strikeouts. McCormack led the team with four runs batted in while Chew and Angelina Franco posted multi-hit games.
