MORAGA, Calif. — Saint Mary's Senior Day didn't go as hoped for on Sunday at Cottrell Field as San Diego (13-29, 5-10 WCC) took the final game of the series by a 3-0 final.
The score remained tied 0-0 heading into the third frame before USD took the lead on an RBI single up the middle from Malia Benson. The Toreros tacked on two more runs in the fifth inning on a single to left field off the bat of Sofia Delgado.
The Gaels (12-22, 3-6 WCC) had six hits in the contest but couldn't cross any runs across the plate against San Diego's starter Madison Earnshaw. SMC threatened in both the third and sixth innings as they put two runners on base with two outs but Earnshaw escaped unscathed both times.
Eileen Perez started in the circle for Saint Mary's and threw 2.1 innings before being relieved. Sofia Earle finished the final 4.2 innings and struck out six. Hannah Chew was the team's top offensive performer on the day as she went 2-for-3 at the plate with two singles.
Prior to the contest, Saint Mary's honored their five graduating seniors who played their final collegiate game at Cottrell Field. The team's seniors included Perez, Chew, Eryn McCoy, Julia McCormack, and Kenedi Lopes. All five Gaels started in the contest.
UP NEXT: LOYOLA MARYMOUNT
