BSB | Late Rally Comes Up One Run Short Short in Middle Game at Santa Clara

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Saint Mary's (25-15, 10-4 WCC) dropped their matchup with Santa Clara (20-19, 7-7 WCC) in the second game of the three game conference set. The Gaels tried to mount a late comeback in the ninth, but fell just one run short to the Broncos in a 6-5 result.
Saint Mary's started off hot in the top of the first with Coleman Schmidt reaching on a walk and then Ryan Pierce kept it going with a two strike single. This set the table for Brian Duroff, who drove them in with a three-run home run that drilled the scoreboard in left center field. Santa Clara answered immediately with a three-run inning of their own that included a solo home run, RBI single, and sacrifice fly to even up the score at 3-3 after just one inning.
Connor Linchey settled in after the first inning and finished his day with 5 innings pitched, allowing 3 runs on 9 hits with 5 strikeouts to just one walk.
Both offenses would then go quiet until the sixth inning, when the Broncos scored two in the sixth to take the lead. They added one more in the eighth to extend their lead to 6-3, and that extra insurance run proved to be vital.
The Gaels did not go down without a fight in the ninth inning when Jared Mettam singled to start the inning. Dalton Mashore then delivered his 10th home run of the season, to cut the lead to just one run. Christian Almanza stepped up with two out in the ninth and lined a double into the right field corner and gave the offense one last chance to tie it. A popout on the infield would end the rally for the Gaels, and Santa Clara held on for their 6-5 victory to even up the series at one apiece.
Some of the impressive offense performers for the Gaels included Mashore, Duroff, and Mettam who all tallied multiple hits. Mashore delivered a single to go along with his ninth inning two-run home run, Duroff also picked up a single to put together a good day including the three-run home run to left center, and Mettam recorded a team-high three hits all coming in the form of singles.
The Gaels will face Santa Clara on Sunday for a rubber match with a scheduled 12:05 pm first pitch. Both programs are currently inside the top six of the WCC standings, and the result could have major implications later in the season when postseason play comes around.
