MSOC | Gaels Finish Week Unbeaten After 2-2 Draw with LMU

LOS ANGELES, Calif. – Saint Mary's capped off their most successful week of the 2025 season as they went unbeaten with a 2-1 win over Santa Clara followed by a gritty 2-2 road draw against LMU Sunday night. TJ Knight and Sam Danner scored the two goals for the Gaels to help split the points with the Lions. Knight put Saint Mary's up 1-0 in the 24th minute and after two unanswered goals from LMU, Danner scored for the second consecutive game to tie things up in the 43rd minute.
Both teams combined for 23 shots in what was an exciting conference matchup. The Gaels are unbeaten against the Lions over their last four matches with a record of 2-0-2 dating back to the 2022 season. Sam Bentley finished with a game high five saves, bringing his season total to 44. Six field players played all 90 minutes for another full team effort on the road.
FIRST HALF SMC 2-2 LMU
All four goals in Sunday's match would come over the first 45 minutes. Saint Mary's would get on the scoreboard first thanks to senior transfer TJ Knight. Off an SMC goal kick, a long ball from Bentley would come off the head of an LMU midfielder and find the feet of Cameron Kobey in transition. Kobey then slipped Knight into the 18-yard box who slotted home a cool calm finish. The goal would be Knight's first as a Gael to give Saint Mary's a 1-0 lead.
LMU responded well though with two unanswered goals to take a 2-1 lead late in the first half. The Lions scored their first just five minutes later and then their second in the 40th minute. An action packed first half would come to an end after the Gaels retook the lead off the foot of Sam Danner for his second goal of the season. In similar fashion, Bentley would send a long ball into the box from a free kick deep in their half. A Lions defender would attempt to head the ball out of the box but the attempt would go down right to Danner just outside the box. Danner took a great first touch with his chest and the rifled a left-footed volley into the bottom corner to knot the game at two.
FINAL SMC 2-2 LMU
Sam Bentley had four saves in the first half and one more in the second to help seal the 2-2 draw. Both teams shot totals took a dip in the second half, combining for just five attempts. Bentley made a comfortable catch within the final minute off a header attempt to ice the game for the Gaels sixth tie of the season.
Jaydon Whittaker, TJ Dilley, Hubert Deragon, Jona Starek, Ian Smith and Fynn Allmon all recorded 90-minute efforts with Dilley, Deragon and Allmon anchoring the team's backline.
LOOKING AHEAD
Saint Mary's earned their sixth draw of the season, moving to 1-5-6 overall and 1-2-2 in conference play. They'll return to Moraga for a showdown with 15th ranked San Diego on Saturday, October 25th. Kickoff is slated for 1:00 PM and tickets can be bought online at smcgaels.com/tickets.
