MSOC | Gaels Host 12th Ranked Toreros for WCC Showdown on Saturday

MORAGA, Calif. - Saint Mary's and San Diego have stood as two of the most successful WCC men's soccer programs over the last ten years and the two will meet once again on Saturday, October 25th at 1:00 PM. The Gaels are on a two-match unbeaten streak while the Toreros have surged into conference play and rank 12th in the country in this week's United Soccer Coaches poll.
The two teams are a combined 2-2-2 over their last six matches in their series history as the Gaels will look for their first win over the Toreros since 2021 and a win over a ranked opponent since defeating #25 LMU back in 2023. Kickoff is slated for 1:00 PM and tickets can be bought online at smcgaels.com/tickets.

Gaels Secure First Win of 2025…
It has been a trying season for the Gaels with tough match after tough match, but they finally got rewarded for their efforts with a 2-1 victory over Santa Clara Wednesday night thanks to a game-winner from first year Gael Sam Danner. Saint Mary's took the lead for the eighth time this season thanks to a header goal from senior captain Bastian Toelhoej in the 10th minute.
Santa Clara equalized just before the half but Saint Mary's caught the Broncos napping to start the second half as Sam Danner scored just a minute and sixteen seconds in to give the Gaels a 2-1 lead. The goal would stand as the game-winner for the Gaels for their first win of the 2025 season. Danner's goal would also go down as his first as a Gael while Adam Dring and Jaydon Whittaker got credit for the assists for their first career points.
1-0-1 Over Unbeaten Week in WCC play…
Saint Mary's took the momentum from their 2-1 victory over Santa Clara earlier in the week to earn an entertaining 2-2 draw with LMU on Sunday. The Gaels finished 1-0-1 for their first unbeaten week of the season. TJ Knight scored his first goal as a Gael off a long goal kick from Sam Bentley in the 24th minute.
The Lions scored two unanswered to take a 2-1 lead but Sam Danner scored his second goal of the week off another long ball from Bentley to make it 2-2. Bentley finished the match with five saves to help preserve the point for the Gaels. With some other favorable results around the WCC, Saint Mary's shot into a tie for sixth place along with Santa Clara and Seattle U at five points each.
Series History…
San Diego has been a conference power for the better part of the last decade but Adam Cooper and the Gaels always find a way to battle the Toreros. Saint Mary's is 2-2-2 over their last six matches with two of them ending in double-overtime draws.
USD has come away with wins though in their last two matchups, outscoring the Gaels 6-3. Saint Mary's will look for their first win over San Diego since a one-goal victory in Moraga back in 2021.
ABOUT THE TOREROS (9-2-3, 3-1-1)
The San Diego Toreros are once again a top west coast program as they enter the week ranked #12 in the country with a 9-2-3 record. They sit in third place in the conference standings at 3-1-1 seeking their fourth straight WCC title. San Diego has been on a heater as a program after winning just two games back in 2021. Since, they've made three consecutive NCAA Tournaments including a thrilling postseason run in 2024. Last season, the Toreros won a pair of games including an upset win over 10th ranked Duke in the second round. They're postseason run came to an end in the third round to the eventual National Champions in Vermont.
After an 0-1-1 start to the 2025 season, USD went on an impressive four-game win streak and a 10-game unbeaten streak. That streak came to an end just two weeks ago with a road loss to 6th ranked Portland. The Toreros have since won back-to-back games over LMU and Seattle U to remain in third place, just a point behind Portland and Oregon State who are tied for the top spot at 3-0-2.
USD is led by Brian Quinn in his eighth season as head coach. Quinn was a long time assistant to program great Seamus McFadden and assumed the head coaching role at the start of the 2018 season.
