MONTEREY, Calif. – The entire tournament field battled through a beautiful but challenging first round at Bayonet Golf Course where over half the field finished over par but Saint Mary's had three of their four counting scores finish even par or better to sit in second place after 18 holes. Junior Avery Lazarski was fantastic, posting an opening round of 68 (-4) to lead the team. His round of four-under also went down as the third lowest score out of the entire field. Lazarski finished one-under on the front but got things going with an eagle on the par-5 10th. He then birdied two of his final three holes to post a 33 on the back nine.

Lazarski finished the day tied for 3rd in par-5 scoring while Baumuller and Williams led the team with five birdies each. Redshirt freshman Sam Baumuller was the team's next best finisher with a 71 (-1). The next two counting scores for the Gaels came from Inigo Izuzquiza and Mitchell Hoey. Izuzquiza finished even par while Hoey was one-over in his opening round. Lazarski, Baumuller and Izuzquiza finished inside the top-25 after round one as Saint Mary's sits five strokes back of Arkansas State at 9-under.

Redshirt sophomore James Williams competed as an individual and led the field of twelve with a 73 (+1). Matthew Almajano also competed as the team's second individual and finished with a first round 82 (+10).
