MONTEREY, Calif. – Round two of the 2025 Saint Mary's Invitational got off to a slow start for the field after an hour and a half fog delay. After four birdies over their first three holes, Saint Mary's ran into some tough pin locations as they dropped seven strokes over the remainder of the front nine.
As the weather warmed up though, the Gaels battled back and got off to a scorching start on the back nine. Amongst their four counting scores, Saint Mary's recorded seven birdies over the first five holes on the back nine. Sam Baumuller, Inigo Izuzquiza, Mitchell Hoey and Avery Lazarski all birdied the par-five 10th to jump them back into the top-three. They would stumble a bit into the clubhouse but their hot stretch to start the back nine put the Gaels in a tie for second place with fellow WCC member Santa Clara.
Baumuller was the team's low score of the day, posting a 71 (-1) while Izuzquiza and Hoey finished even par. Lazarski was the team's fourth counting score at one-over-par while Aidan Lee posted a 75 (+3) as the team's dropped score. Individually, James Williams finished six-over with Matthew Almajano one stroke behind at seven-over-par.
Saint Mary's found themselves even with tournament leader Arkansas State early on the front nine, with both teams at 8-under, but the Red Wolves made fewer mistakes down the stretch to hang on to an eight-stroke lead. The Gaels will start to tee off at 9:44 AM Wednesday morning, looking for a final round push to capture the tournament title.
