MTEN | Saint Mary’s Splits Weekend Matches after 5-2 Win over New Mexico

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - Saint Mary's went south for a pair of matches against Cal Poly and New Mexico last weekend and came away with a split after defeating the Lobos 5-2 Sunday night. Dan Cardiff and his squad improved to 3-2 on the season and got some impressive performances Sunday night in their win over New Mexico.
After a 7-0 sweep from the Mustangs to start the weekend on Saturday, the Gaels bounced back to earn the doubles point and win four singles matches to take down New Mexico 5-2. Finn Dyer/Thibaud Maxant and Paulo Hugo Etchecoin/Juan Pedro Etchecoin earned the doubles point for Saint Mary's. The Etchecoin brothers are now 2-2 on the season as doubles partners and continue to be a solid pair in the number two position for the Gaels.
Thibaud Maxant, Paulo Hugo Etchecoin, Bastien Maxant and Sam Simmonds earned the four singles victories for the Gaels to secure the 5-2 match victory. Maxant and Etchecoin secured perfect 2-0 performances with their wins in doubles and singles play while true freshman Sam Simmonds dominated in the six-spot, winning in straight sets 6-3 6-3 for his first Division I singles victory.
LOOKING AHEAD
Saint Mary's improved to 3-2 overall after their 5-2 victory over New Mexico Sunday night. They will return to Moraga next weekend for a pair of home matches against Portland State and Sacramento State on Saturday, February 7th and Sunday the eighth.
