SB | Gaels Complete Sweep of Montana with 8-0 Victory, Move Home Unbeaten Streak to 11 Straight
3/13/2026 6:54:00 PM | Softball
MORAGA, Calif. — The Saint Mary's softball team made quick work of Montana in Friday's game three finale, defeating the Grizzlies 8-0 in five innings to complete the series sweep. The win marks the Gaels' 11th straight at Cottrell, the longest home winning streak in Coach Sonja Garnett's tenure.
Sophomore shortstop and nine-hole hitter Mia Zabat drove in half of the Gaels' runs today, going 2-for-2 with a homer and four RBI. Hannah Ferguson and Camille Lara each also notch multi-hit ballgames, with Lara scoring twice. In the circle, Odhi Vasquez went the distance for her second complete game victory of the week, and her second complete game shutout of the season. Her eight strikeouts were a new season-high, and her most since fanning nine at LMU in last year's season finale series opener.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Odhi Vasquez retired the first eight batters she faced, while her offense struck for three runs in the bottom of the second on a three run blast from Mia Zabat, to put the Gaels (17-10) on the board early. Montana (4-17) would have to wait until two outs in the third before logging their first and only hit against Vasquez, but would see just two reach base all game, stranding both on the basepaths.
The Gaels added a fourth run in the third, when Averie Prescott launched a ball to the deepest part of the park in center, and while it was brought back into the yard by Montana's center fielder, it rolled all the way off of her glove into right, giving plenty of time for Prescott to motor around the bases for an inside the park round tripper. Saint Mary's chased Montana's starter in the fourth inning, scoring two more runs in the process on a Kiah Silva RBI single and a Braxton Brown bases loaded walk, bringing the scoreline to 6-0. Then, in the fifth, a hit, a Montana error and a sacrifice fly would plate Alex Cutonilli and Kiah Silva to end the game in run rule fashion.
GAME NOTES
The Gaels will hit the road to the Centennial State for a single game with Colorado State (Mar. 19) and a three game series with Northern Colorado (Mar. 20-21).
