SB | Vasquez Gem Secures Her Program Wins Record and Series Opening Win Over Seattle U, 2-0

SEATTLE, Wash. — Entering Friday evening's contest, Odhi Vasquez needed just one victory to secure the program's all-time wins record, and pitched the Gaels' softball team to that victory, 2-0. In the Gaels' first-ever West Coast Conference matchup against Seattle U, the senior ace was nothing short of dominant, surrendering just one hit in the ballgame while fanning 11 to etch her name into the history books.
The final line for Vasquez read seven full innings worked, one hit allowed and 11 strikeouts to just one walk, as she left no one to question her National Pitcher of the Week award earned last weekend. Offensively, Alex Cutonilli was the Gael's biggest contributor, going 1-for-3, scoring the first run in the fifth for Saint Mary's (28-11, 4-0 WCC), and seeing the second run score off of her bat on a Seattle U defensive miscue.
With the win, the Gaels are now in sole possession of first place in the WCC standings.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Odhi Vasquez surrendered a lead-off single in the first inning, then retired nine consecutive batters to get through three innings scoreless with six strikeouts. She walked the lead-off hitter in the fourth, but that would be the final baserunner that she would surrender, retiring the final 12 batters in order, adding five more strikeouts.
The offense finally broke through against Seattle U ace Berkley Vance in the fifth with some small ball. Alex Cutonilli and Kiah Silva led off the frame with back-to-back bunt singles, and Janessa Parras would bloop a hit into center field to load the basepaths with nobody out. Mia Zabat lifted the second pitch she saw to medium-deep left field, deep enough to score Cutonilli on a sac fly and break the scoreless stalemate. A frame later Camille Lara and Taylor Lane each worked walks to start the sixth, and Lara came around to score on a two out error off the bat of Cutonilli, doubling up the lead. The two runs were more than enough to secure the win for the Gaels thanks to the brilliant outing from Vasquez.
GAME NOTES
The Gaels will take on Seattle U at 4 p.m. PT on Saturday for game two of this three-game set.
