SB | Gaels Complete Sweep of Oregon State to Remain Atop WCC Standings

MORAGA, Calif. — The Saint Mary's softball team completed its 4-0 week and its West Coast Conference series sweep of the Oregon State Beavers, winning Sunday's series finale, 8-4. Paired with another win by the Pacific Tigers over Santa Clara, the Gaels now hold a 3.5 game stranglehold of first place in the WCC standings at the halfway point of conference play.
At the top of the order, Camille Lara and Hannah Ferguson each tallied three hits. Lara scored all three times that she was on base, while Ferguson drove in a pair with her program record 13th career triple. Taylor Lane and Andrea De La Rosa each also drove in two, Lane's coming on a two-run blast, and De Le Rosa's coming on her first collegiate extra-base hit, a two-run double. The Gaels used a trio of pitchers in this one, starting Ella Thurman, who went 4.1 for the win. Madeline Haun worked two full frames out of the pen, while Odhi Vasquez retired the final two Beaver batters to secure the 8-4 win.
HOW IT HAPPENED
For the third time in as many contests, the Gaels struck first in the first. Camille Lara led off the home half of the first with a single and stole second with two outs. Braxton Brown worked a free pass before Sam Buckley waited out a change up before sending it through the left side to score Lara, getting the Gaels on the front foot early. With two away in the second, Mia Zabat and Camille Lara logged back-to-back knocks before Hannah Ferguson drove a ball out to deep left center, scoring both and earning herself her program record 13th career triple. After a 1-2-3 top of the third worked by Ella Thurman, the Gaels cashed in two more runs on another two out rally in the bottom half, capped with a two RBI double from freshman Andrea De La Rosa, her first collegiate extra-base hit.
Thurman worked four scoreless frames, and retired her first batter faced in the fifth with her lone strikeout of the day, but then gave up three straight singles and hit a batter to end the shutout effort and her day, giving way to Madeline Haun out of the bullpen. Haun gave up a deep fly ball to left that was snagged over the wall by Lara, allowing just one run to come in, rather than four on a potential grand slam robbery by the Gaels' left fielder. Haun would then retire the potential tying run via a lineout to short, and the Gaels would quickly restore the lead back to five on a two run blast by Taylor Lane.
The Gaels would push across an insurance run in the sixth, when Camille Lara and Hannah Ferguson led off the frame with back-to-back singles, and Lara scored on an Alex Cutonilli RBI fielder's choice. Haun recorded the first out of the seventh before loading the bases and giving way to Odhi Vasquez, looking to slam the door shut. Vasquez induced a pair of groundouts, sandwiching a single, allowing a pair of inherited runners to score, but keeping the Gaels lead intact to see away the sweep.
