LOS ANGELES, Calif. - The Saint Mary's baseball team had everything working Friday night against LMU, scoring a season-high 17 runs behind a career outing from sophomore pitcher Lukas Sarantos as the Gaels rolled to a 17-4 run-rule victory in game one over the Lions.
Saint Mary's (27-21, 12-10 West Coast Conference) showcased its high powered offense with a season high 17 runs off an efficient 16 hits along with clean defense. Sophomore starter Lukas Sarantos got the ball Friday night for just his fourth start of the season and absolutely delivered for the Gaels, pitching a career high seven innings along with 11 strikeouts to earn his second win of the season. At the plate, sophomore right fielder Diego Castellanos had a four-hit night including three doubles and a season high four RBI. Leadoff hitter Tanner Griffith also reached base four times and recorded a pair of hits with two RBI.
Additional multi-hit games came from Ian Josephson, Jared Mettam and Cody Kashimoto as the Gaels cruised to the dominant game one victory at Page Stadium.
HOW IT HAPPENED
LMU (12-39, 3-19) actually got on the scoreboard first with a solo home run in the first inning but Saint Mary's responded with a three-run second inning to take the lead back for good. Along with the offense heating up, Lukas Sarantos got going as well as he retired the next six batters to limit the Lions offense to just four runs off eight hits over his career high seven innings of work. Sarantos also struck out a career high 11 batters en route to his second win of the season, giving the Gaels a much needed lengthy start in game one of the three-game series.
Ian Josephson crushed a no-doubter in the top of the third for his second homer of the season to put the Gaels up 4-1. Saint Mary's went on to score in seven of the eight innings to tally a season high 17 runs. Ian Armstrong hit a two-run shot to dead center in the fourth to tie teammate Makoa Sniffen for the team lead in homers with eleven. Four runs in the fifth and four more in the eighth would help put the Gaels in run-rule distance as Saint Mary's completed the 13-run victory. Castellanos doubled for the third time in the eighth to score Cody Kashimoto and then an RBI ground out from Sniffen would score the Gaels' 17th run of the ballgame.
