Verrier and Fillol Advance to Third Round of Singles Play At SMC ITA Regional

Moraga, CA - On the first day of the 2002 Saint Mary's ITA Regional, Valerie Verrier and Catalina Fillol picked up two singles victories each to advance into the third round. Both players will begin the round of 16 at 9:00 am on Saturday from the Timothy Korth Tennis Complex. The doubles team of Verrier and Nicole Hunstock advanced to the second round with an 8-3 victory.
In her first match of the day, Verrier picked up an easy win by defeating UC Davis' Christy Battig, 6-0 and 6-1. In her second round match, Verrier faced Gabriel Ruiz of San Francisco, who had defeated fellow Gael Megan Schulman 6-3 and 6-1, and picked up another straight set victory, winning 6-3 and 6-1.
Fillol had a tough, straight sets, first round victory over Jessica Beauchene of Pacific. Fillol defeated Beauchene 6-4 and 7-6 to advance to a second round meeting with Jennifer Seigel of Santa Clara. After winning the first set 7-6 in a tie-breaker, Fillol won the second set 6-3 over Seigel to advance to the tird round.
Senior Lindsey Herndon-Ortega and freshman Katie Harden picked up first round victories as well. Herndon-Ortega defeated Stephany Chang of USF 6-4 and 6-1, before suffering a tournament ending defeat to Roberta Fessenk of Sacramento State, 6-0 and 6-1. Harden passed through the tournament much like Herndon-Ortega, posting a 1-1 record in singles play. Harden defeated Pacific's Melissa Selmanson, 6-1 and 6-0, before suffering a second round loss to Biljana Trpeska of Nevada, 6-1 and 6-2.
Three other Gaels will continue in Saturday's consolation bracket, which include Schulman, Nicole Hunstock and Lisanne Elfring, and Megan Schulman. Hunstock dropped her first match to Brooke Borisoff of California, 6-1 and 6-0. Elfring suffered a straight sets loss to Carla Arguelles of Cal, 6-0 and 6-0. All three players will begin consolation round action Saturday morning.
Kathryn Meister posted a 1-1 record in her first collegiate tournament. Meister posted a qualifying round victory over Jill Rader of San Francisco, 7-6 and 6-4. Meister then lost her second match, in the round of 64, to Margarita Karnaukhova of Sacramento State, 6-0 and 6-1.
Saint Mary's had one of four doubles teams advance to the second round. Verrier and Hunstock defeated Courtney Chung and Caysea Dawson of UC Davis, 8-3. The team of Herndon-Ortega and Schulman suffered a heart breaking loss 9-8 to Kerri Roemer and Gretchen Schantz of Davis. Elfring and Meister fell 8-0 in their doubles match and the team of Fillol and Harden were defeated 8-4.
The SMC ITA Regional will continue with singles matches beginning at 9:00 am on Saturday morning at the Timothy Korth Tennis Complex on the Saint Mary's Campus.
