MORAGA, Calif. — An overwhelming offense finally broke through in the second half Friday, as Western Michigan defeated the Saint Mary's men's soccer team, 2-0, with two second half goals at Saint Mary's Stadium.
The Gaels (0-3-2) shut out the Broncos (5-0) for nearly 57 minutes, but WMU's relentless offense finally broke through 12 minutes into the second half. Western Michigan outshot Saint Mary's 14-7, though the shots were just 7-5 in the second half as SMC picked up its attack.
Western Michigan broke the scoreless tie on a set piece off a corner. Tommy Clark sent the ball all the way to the back post, where it freely found Zack Bock for a header back into the net and a 1-0 lead.
14 minutes after they scored their first, The Broncos got another. Connor McNulty lobbed a pass from outside the corner of the penalty area towards the left side of the box. WMU's leading scorer Brandon Bye took one touch to settle the ball and get around a defender, firing with his right foot to tuck the ball in between the goalkeeper and the left post for a 2-0 advantage.
Andrew Konstantino made seven saves after facing nine shots on goal. Saint Mary's has allowed two goals in four of its five matches this season, going 0-2-2 in those games.
The Gaels' four-match home stand continues at noon Sunday when they face UNLV. Season tickets and single-match tickets are available for this weekend and all Saint Mary's home matches. Purchase tickets by clicking here or by calling the Saint Mary's ticket office at 925-631-GoTx.
