WSOC | Gaels Fall Short In Overtime to North Dakota
8/25/2019 11:35:00 AM | Women's Soccer
Saint Mary's dominated in many facets of Sunday's match against the Fighting Hawks but couldn't notch the win on the road.
GRAND FORKS, N.D. — For the second straight match, Saint Mary's (0-2) outshot their opponent by a wide margin but came up short in the end as the Gaels fell in overtime to North Dakota, 2-1.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Jaylen Crim tallied the Gaels' first goal of 2019 in the 52nd minute with a header off a corner kick to give Saint Mary's a 1-0 lead. Picking up assists on the score were Malia Allison and Kamryn Farro.
The lead didn't hold for long however as North Dakota (1-0-1) immediately replied with a goal of their own from Mara Yapello less than two minutes later.
Saint Mary's would have a golden opportunity to take the lead later in the 81st minute as they managed three consecutive shots towards the UND net but Fighting Hawks' goalkeeper Catherine Klein made saves on all three attempts to keep the game tied.
North Dakota won the match in the 108th minute off a deflected clearance in the SMC box that rolled back into the Gaels' net. UND's Meghan Wilson was credited for her first goal of the year on the play.
The Gaels outshot the Fighting Hawks 20-8 in the match despite the loss. SMC has now taken 20 shots in both of their matches this year. Allison, Vanessa Gaitan, and Isabella Santavicca all took three shots to lead the offense.
THOUGHTS FROM TRAVIS CLARKE
- "This is a hard one for us, we did everything right except score. To be 0-2 with 40 shots over the weekend is an issue that our attacking group must sort out moving forward. We had good moments and some positives to build on but we can't let games like that get away from us."
- "We'll head home, look at film, and find a way to score some goals."
- The Gaels return to Saint Mary's Stadium for their home opener against Green Bay on Thursday. Kick off is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. Tickets and links to the match can be found on the team's schedule page.
