MORAGA, Calif. — Saint Mary's Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics Mike Matoso has announced the signing of head women's soccer coach Theresa Romagnolo to a multi-year contract extension through the 2026 season.
In her first two seasons as head coach, Romagnolo has made an immediate impact. She led the Gaels to a 10-4-4 record this past season, the best since 2001. In her first season, she led the Gaels to four conference wins, the most in 16 years.
"Theresa has quickly changed the dynamic around the women's soccer program at Saint Mary's College," Matoso said. "We are thrilled to extend her contract and keep building on the momentum she has created. This is a well-deserved extension and we look forward to many more years of working together."
Following the 2021 season, the Gaels had numerous postseason honors, including for the first time in school history, a freshman of the year in Alexis Gutierrez. Saint Mary's also had a first team all-conference selection in Suzuna Shibukawa and two honorable mention members in Maya Alcantara and AnnaMaria DiGeronimo.
"I'm thankful to our Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics Mike Matoso for his belief and support of our program," Romagnolo said. "I am thrilled to be at SMC and work with the great student-athletes that we attract. This is a special place and an exciting time for SMC women's soccer."
After the spring season of 2021, Romagnolo's first year, freshman Taylor Poland was named WCC Goalkeeper of the Year and became the team's first All-WCC First Team honoree since 2017. Maya Alcantara was also selected to the Second Team, marking the program's most representatives on either team since 2010.
