SB | Smith, Gaels Walk Off on USD to Split Doubleheader

MORAGA, Calif. — Both games of Saturday's doubleheader between Saint Mary's and San Diego proved to be pitching battles with a total of just four runs scored on the day. The Gaels (12-21, 3-5 WCC) would walk-off in the latter contest to split the two-game set.

GAME 1 RECAP
San Diego 3, Saint Mary's 0

Sofia Earle started for the Gaels in the circle and had a terrific showing even though she took the loss. Earle threw a complete game and gave up just two earned runs, four hits, two walks, while striking out nine. It was the sixth complete game of the season for the lefthander.

Earle carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning but it was broken up as the first batter of the inning Mali Benson singled just inside the right field line.

San Diego (12-29, 4-10 WCC) scored the first run of the game without recording a hit in the second inning on a fielder's choice. USD added two insurance runs in the top of the seventh with one coming as an unearned run.

The Gaels' offense had five hits in the contest, one more than the Toreros. Jayda Alaan went 2-for-3 with a double while Kenedi Lopes also picked up two hits.

GAME 2 RECAP
Saint Mary's 1, San Diego 0 (8)

The second game of Saturday's doubleheader was even more of a pitching duel than the first with neither team surrendering a run through seven innings. Eileen Perez started on the rubber for the Gaels and ended up throwing a complete game shutout while surrendering just four hits, no walks, and striking out one.

Through seven, Saint Mary's had five walks but only one hit on offense. Things looked promising heading into extras however as the Gaels had the top of the order coming to bat.

After a quick first out, Marissa Montelongo earned a full-count walk to put speed on the bases for SMC. Indya Smith was the ensuing batter and fell behind 0-2 after cranking the first two pitches hard to the right side but just foul. Smith didn't miss on the third pitch of the at-bat however as she hit a screaming liner down the right field line and in play. The ball rolled all the way to the fence and Montelongo raced around first and scored standing up to give Saint Mary's the walk-off win.

The double for Smith was her team-leading eighth of the year. The sophomore has had a breakout offensive season as she leads the team in batting average, on-base percentage, and slugging percentage this year.

Perez picked up her third win of the year in the circle and also recorded her third complete game.

UP NEXT: SENIOR DAY
Saint Mary's will celebrate Senior Day tomorrow with the final home game of the regular season. First pitch will be at 11 a.m. and the team will honor their five graduating seniors prior to the contest.
