RIVERSIDE, Calif. - Saint Mary's Baseball continues to show they can win in every fashion during their 9-0 start, from blowouts to pitcher's duals, and now a late come-from-behind win.
The Gaels trailed 3-0 going into the sixth inning in their first of four games at UC Riverside this weekend, before erupting for four runs in the sixth and scoring a run in the seventh, eighth, and ninth for a 7-3 victory.
Gavin Napier and
Christian Almanza got the rally started with a consecutive singles before
Christopher Campos walked to chase UC Riverside's starting pitcher.
Nathan Chong then drove in the Gaels first run with a single to center that scored Napier.
Nick Mistone reached on an error by the first baseman that plated Almanza to make it 3-2, though the Highlanders did eliminate Campos from the bases by getting him out at third.
Mistone and Chong each advanced on a wild pitch, and then there went that Mann again.
Blake Mann doubled to drive in Mistone and Chong scored on an error by the shortstop as the Gaels baserunners again put pressure on a defense which led to errors and SMC was up 4-3.
Marc Goulart walked to start the seventh inning and was pinch run for by
Dalton Mashore, who would advance to third on two wild pitches. With two outs Napier flew out to center field to drive in Mashore and it was 5-3 Gaels. The eighth began like the seventh, as Campos walked to start the inning and was driven in on a Mistone double for a 6-3 lead.
It was a two-out rally that led to the Gaels final run of the night, as
Seth Nager walked and stole second before scoring on a Napier double to make it 7-3 SMC. Campos switched from shortstop to pitcher in the eighth inning and closed it out with two shutout innings, though he did hit two batters in the eighth.
Ryan Taurek was one out away from pitching five innings for the second time this year, but gave way to
Ryan Sanders who got the win after throwing a scoreless 2/3 of an inning. Taurek allowed three runs on just four his while walking three and striking out six.
Jack Snook didn't allow a run in 1.1 innings and
Chris Santiago got the final out of the seventh.
