LAST TIME OUT
Last Saturday afternoon was the start of a three-game West Coast Conference series for Saint Mary's Softball against the Santa Clara Broncos. The Gaels needed a strong output after dropping their first two conference series, and perhaps that spark came in game two. After losing game one of the double dip once the Broncos came from behind, Saint Mary's rallied to take game two by a final of 8-2, splitting the doubleheader before losing the final game of the series 7-0 to Santa Clara. The Gaels have yet to win a West Coast Conference series this season, but they have two remaining during the regular season.
KEEP 'EM COMIN'
The offense exploded for Saint Mary's in game two of their doubleheader against Santa Clara, breaking out for eight runs on 14 hits. The eight runs were the second-best offensive output for SMC this season, with only their 13 runs against Sacramento State representing a better run total. Five Gaels had multiple hits in the game, includingÂ
Marissa Nishihara who led the way with three hits in game two.Â
Reyna Heredia andÂ
Bry Waters recorded mutli-hit games for the first time this season, andÂ
Sasa Koria recorded her first multi-hit game since coming back from a concussion.Â
Indya Smith also produced two hits and was involved in several rallies, scoring three times. All of this offense was more than enough forÂ
Kayla Scott to record the complete game victory.
ABOUT THE OPPONENTS
UC Santa Barbara has not had a promising season this year, with their last eight competitions ending in defeat. The Gauchos pitching staff as a whole holds an ERA of a high 5.83. To keep games close, five Gauchos have been swinging a hot bat, with batting averages of above .300. Coming to the end of the season, the Gauchos hope to turn the tables against Saint Mary's.
Pacific is at the bottom of the pack in WCC play, with their only conference win occurring in one game against Santa Clara. At the plate, sophomore Tiger Rian Dirmeyer has been putting in work for Pacific, posting a batting average of .336, an RBI of 24, and a team high of eight home runs this season. The Tigers look to end their downfall with just two conference series remaining.Â
