SEATTLE, Wash. – Saint Mary's secured the perfect 2-0 week Saturday afternoon after catching fire from deep and outscoring the Redhawks 50-31 to improve to 4-5 in WCC play. For the first time this season, Saint Mary's had four players finish the game in double-figures including Addi Wedin who led the Gaels with eleven points on 66% shooting. Helping lead the offensive spark in the second half was fellow Wedin, Ella Wedin, who made three three-pointers to finish with nine points in 23 minutes off the bench.
Saint Mary's will return to the Pacific Northwest next Thursday for a rematch with the Portland Pilots. Tip is slated for 6:00 PM and you can stream the game live on ESPN+.
FIRST HALF SMC 17-22 SU
Despite holding Seattle U to 22 first half points, the Gaels offense struggled to get going as they posted consecutive single-digit quarters to find themselves down five at the break. Saint Mary's shot 29% from the field and were just 1-for-8 from beyond the arc. Scoring came from Abigail Shoff who led the team with five points, but the Gaels defended the perimeter and kept the Redhawks off the free throw line as they came into Saturday afternoon leading the WCC in free throw percentage at 78%.
FINAL SMC 67-53 SU
Head coach Jeff Cammon clearly had a productive halftime chat as the Gaels came out and shot nearly 70% from the field in the third quarter, making nine shots and were a perfect 4-for-4 from the free throw line. The Gaels cut the deficit to one on several occasions in the period but ended the quarter on a 7-0 scoring run including a three-pointer at the buzzer from Amy Kurkowski.
That 7-0 run would extend all the way to 17 into the start of the fourth quarter as Saint Mary's flipped the game and took an 11-point lead. Good ball movement and quick triggers from beyond the arc highlighted the scoring run. Ella Wedin came off the bench and drilled two three-pointers during the stretch and Abigail Shoff and Addi Wedin cashed in on threes of their own as Saint Mary's hit five in the quarter.
The Wedin sisters combined for 16 points in the fourth quarter as all nine points in the game for Ella came in the final ten minutes. Saint Mary's forced five turnovers in the period, held Seattle U to just two scorers and closed the game on a 9-0 run to seal the 14-point come-from-behind victory.
Edie Clarke was perfect from the stripe and added ten points while Amy Kurkowski and Ella Wedin combined for 18 points off the bench and four made three-pointers.
