SB | Gaels Drop Finale in Seattle

SEATTLE, Wash. — The Saint Mary's softball team struggled to get the offense going in the series finale against the Seattle U Redhawks, dropping the contest 8-0 in six frames. The Gaels wrap up their second week of West Coast Conference play at 5-1, remaining in first place.
Saint Mary's (29-12, 5-1 WCC) was limited to just a pair of hits in this one, with Alex Cutonilli accounting for one and Lauren Tran coming up with a pinch hit knock for the other. The Gaels used a trio of pitchers, with freshman Madeline Haun getting a bulk of the work, going four full innings of relief, surrendering two runs.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Odhi Vasquez got the start in the Sunday finale against the Redhawks (18-21, 4-2 WCC), and struck out the side in the first, but not before surrendering three runs. Madeline Haun came on in relief, and tossed the second, third and fourth frames scoreless, stranding a pair of base runners in the process. Seattle pushed one across in the fifth, and led off the sixth with a solo shot, as Haun would then give way to Ella Thurman. Thurman struck out two of the first three batters she faced, but then gave up three straight hits, plating three more runs and ending the ballgame in run rule fashion.
The Gaels generated run scoring opportunities in the second and fourth innings. In the top of the second, Alex Cutonilli led off the frame with a single back up the middle, and with two outs, Janessa Parras was plunked and Kiah Silva walked to load the bases. A pop out, however, would end that frame. In the fourth, Taylor Lane and Sam Buckley would work back-to-back one out walks, but a double play would bring that frame to an end.
