SB | Gaels Reach 30 Win Mark for Third Time in Program History with 6-2 Victory Over UC Davis

MORAGA, Calif. — The Saint Mary's softball team continued to defend their home field at an incredible rate, winning their 15th straight at Cottrell Field with a 6-2 victory over the UC Davis Aggies. The Gaels have now reached the 30 win mark for just the third time in program history, and are one win away from a new program record for single season wins.
Averie Prescott put together the best offensive showing of her career, going 2-for-2 with a double, a home run and four RBI, accounting for 2/3rds of the Gaels' (30-12) runs scored. Alex Cutonilli also stayed hot, with a two hit ballgame, while freshman Madeline Haun went the distance in the circle for just the second time in her career, allowing just two runs (one earned) on six hits while striking out four to move to 6-2 on the campaign.
HOW IT HAPPENED
UC Davis (21-21) hit the scoreboard first in this one before the Gaels had a chance to swing the bats, scoring the opening run on two hits and an error. With runners at the corners, Madeline Haun was able to limit the damage to just the lone run in that frame, followed by five consecutive zeroes hung up. That stretch started with a 1-2-3 top of the second, which swung momentum in favor of the Gaels.
In the bottom of the second, the Gaels offense responded following Haun's 1-2-3 top of the frame, as Sam Buckley led off with a walk, followed by an opposite field double by Averie Prescott to draw level at one apiece. Saint Mary's then added five runs in the bottom of the third to open up a comfortable lead that they would hold onto throughout the remainder of the game. Alex Cutonilli started things off that inning with an 0-2 one out single, followed by a Braxton Brown walk. Sam Buckley then lifted a fly ball to deep left field that fell inside the chalk fair to score Cutonilli, and Brown scored on an error in center field off the bat of Victoria Castillo. Ahead already 3-1, Prescott stepped up for the second time in as many innings, and again drove a ball to the opposite field, this time with enough mustard to send it over the fence for her second career home run, and her first over the fence, after hitting an inside the park homer earlier this year. The Aggies were able to push one across eventually in the top of the seventh, but never brought the tying run to the plate, as the Gaels closed the victory out, 6-2.

GAME NOTES
- Saint Mary's reached the 30 win mark for just the third time in program history today. The other two 30 win seasons came in 2010 and 2024, the two years that Saint Mary's qualified for NCAA Regional play.
- The Gaels also moved their home winning streak to 15 straight dating back to last season, as they remain undefeated at home in 2026.
- Saint Mary's improved their record to a perfect 23-0 when scoring at least four runs, and completed their eighth victory when falling behind first, moving to 8-9 in those instances.
- Averie Prescott was the Gaels offensive star, driving in a career-high four runs, including an RBI double and a three-run home run.
- It was the first career multi-extra base hit game for the junior Prescott.
- Alex Cutonilli added a pair of hits for her ninth multi-hit ballgame of the year. She also extended her team-best hit streak to five straight games.
- Freshman Madeline Haun worked her second collegiate complete game effort in the victory, tossing a career-high 140 pitches en route to her sixth win of the season.
- Haun has not suffered a loss in 14 straight outings.
- Sam Buckley scored her 111th and 112th career runs in this one, moving to second all-time in program history for runs scored.
- Hannah Ferguson swiped her 58th career bag, moving into a tie for second most in program history.
